Generator AGM Start Battery Suddenly Dead

AGM start batteries have their place. If size is an issue AGM will excell. If you need to store in a non vertical position again AGM. For start, cranes and thrusters I find SLA to be the better value but there are other circumstances that can make SLA not an acceptable choice.

Generator AGM Start Battery Suddenly Dead

Battery cells short for all kinds of reasons. I even got a new battery from a very reputable manufacturer with a defective cell. It just happens. Sadly, there are few technicians who know how to Test a battery and none of them work at Fisheries Supply. If they just through a resistance...

    New start batteries

You are correct, deep cycle is not appropriate for your situation. I am fine with the windlass being on the start bank. Start engines, bring up anchor, so no problem there, both want CCA not constant voltage low amp use. My only recommendation would be to replace each 8d with either two group...

Generator AGM Start Battery Suddenly Dead

1000 CCA is way more than you need to start a generator. More is always better if you have the room. Jack, I know you from SSYC days, happy cruising.

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

I cut the cable 10’ from one end. After I chased the cable from my arch to an AC socket I spliced the end back on.

    Lithium house bank project

Just so people understand, most fuses are installed to preserve the wire simple as that. However, as you get in to larger battery banks, you end up with enough power that the bank can melt down the fuse and jump across the gap. You need a fuse that is capable of withstanding the destructive...

Need recommendation for engine replacement near Anacortes, WA.

Being in Anacortes, I would contract the yard for storage only and a lift of old engine out and new engine in. It appears that you are capable of handling everything else.

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

The router is an electronic item. I don’t recommend it being in the flybridge. In my case the most convenient spot turned out to be the air return duct for my AC. The starlink cable is just a Cat 6 cable and can be cut and spliced to make longer or shorter.

    Lithium house bank project

I have a 1060 AH Lifepo4 bank. Yesterday I pulled 40amps for 6 hours and 20 amps for 8 hours. It took me 5 hours at 100AH charging to get back to full. These numbers don’t exactly add up because I am not monitoring very carefully plus I still have heavy demand even while charging. I am again...

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

The Gen 3 should be mounted flat. This way it has the best exposure to satellites as the boats orientation changes. The Gen 2 goes flat while the boat is in motion and reorients when the boat is stopped. I have had no issues with wind and I spent a lot of the winter in 30 kts of wind.

    Starlink

Yes, for $30 additional, in other words for $150 a month.. I went Regional Roam all last summer. Once I got back home I switched to Residential. I leave Starlink on all year so I am not familiar with pause.

Need recommendation for engine replacement near Anacortes, WA.

I don’t see how the cylinder could escape scoring. I would be uncomfortable with anything less than a short block swap. OP seems very capable otherwise I would be saying Long block swap.

    Starlink

My residential plan is based in Seattle I can travel about 5 miles as the crow flies and everything is fine. After that I get a message that says out of location. Then all I need do is switch to the Roam plan and I have service again. Technically, Roam is lower priority but I never notice the...

Northern Lights Lugger Marine engine L1064D oil changes

I agree with TT. CAT calls for 250 hour oil changes. I change my oil every 100 hours and the filter every 200 hours. My car calls for 8,000 mile oil changes, I do it every 5,000. I never suffer from lifter issues like the people who push oil changes out to the max.

    Davit Spreader Bar

Just relocate the strap that has interference. Most the weight is in the back 1/3 of the dingy. Relocate the bow strap to center line.

SF to Seattle in a 1977 53 ft. wood trawler

The last time I made a run from SF to Seattle I saw Crab pots as deep as 400’. I recommend running in 500’ of water at night.

    Conception captain gets sentenced

Probably true but what is the functional utility of that 15.4 years? That said, he will spend his time in a Fed prison, he will probably get time off for good behavior, I really can’t say if he got too much time or too little. I can’t say what his health looks like or how many years his life...

    Starlink Mini

My understanding is that you must already have a home plan for $120 a month in order to get the $30 a month add on. Good deal if you have a home plan. On the other hand it might justify dropping your home provider and switching to starlink at home if it’s costing you $150 on the boat anyway.

That inline boosting transformer looks like a pretty simple solution.

    Battery charger

I will take a moment to caution people on Inverters and chargers. There was a time when Heart was at the top of the game. They got replaced with Trace. Unfortunately, both were bought by Xantrex who destroyed both products by building them as cheaply as possible. Magnum stepped in and took...

Boost Volts from 208 to 230

Twistedtree is much more up to date on isolation transformers of this size than I am. Hopefully he will jump in here with some ideas for you.

Boost Volts from 208 to 230

First I am not familiar with your current isolation transformer. So I do not know what can be done there. I do not know what your 240v demands are. In my case the only 240v demand is my dryer. The rest of my boat is 120v. If your situation is similar, you can remove the isolation transformer...

Marine Trader vs.CHB PT vs Ocean Alexander

It’s the little things that OA does that most don’t notice until 30 years later. Things like the port lights being rebuildable. After 35 years I replaced all my port light lens and gaskets. Water, fuel and hydraulic lines being copper instead of rubber. Oversized backing plates to spread the...

    Can’t track Garmin Watch

Which watch model? Was it designed to broadcast its position? I have a Garmin InReach. Broadcasts great but only if it’s turned on. Currently it is turned off and I don’t have a subscription active.
