    Starlink

Yeah, if I was a livaboard I'd spring for it even at $200/mo due to the unlimited data but for occasional use & 1-2 intensive months in the summer (and on vacation, so shouldn't be sitting around streaming Netflix anyway) I think a minimal data plan or two that can be shut off is better for me...

Ford Lehman 120 Stainless Steel Exhaust Elbow

The advice I've received is to avoid stainless bolts on an engine. I don't think Grade 8 is necessary either. I used Black-Oxide Grade 5 bolts with marine grade anti-seize when I replaced mine, but I suspect that might be overkill - I was ordering from McMaster-Carr anyway so decided to pay a...

Is it possible to clean one's bilge these days?

Thanks for the Shop Vac recommendation - Great tip! There's a fuel dock near my boat that will take a 5gal pail of whatever you might want to get rid of and responsibly dispose of it for $5. Having twin 1979 Ford Lehmans I...uh... do not have no oil in my bilge (I'm working on it!) I don't...

    Starlink

I just went ahead and ordered a good cellar antenna and mid-range Peplink router for about $800. I think for coastal stuff that should be pretty good & from what the Seabits article says there are enough dropouts on Starlink to require secondary connection for video calls. So even if I had...

    PNW Trawler Market - Prices

    I've noticed a surge in totally bonkers listings recently - here's a 1990 Jefferson ACMY asking $450k - check out the engine room pic! https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/1990-jefferson-acmy-8287945/ '89 Tolly 53 asking $375k https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/1989-tollycraft-motor-yacht-8290403/

Are Cell Boosters worth the install/price?

Keeping this thread going, I decided to upgrade my boat connectivity in anticipation of this summer's cruising season. Last year we did okay just using cell phone hotspots (Verizon & AT&T) & a WeBoost cell booster for more distant parts of Catalina and Santa Cruz Islands. This was just barely...

    Repower update

3nmpg at 7.4kt - that's pretty good, particularly when combined with that top end capability! Now you just need to get out there and start accumulating miles so you can pay for the swap with your fuel savings :)

    Repower update

Very impressive! I would have pegged a repower like that at $100k? Even if you value your and your helper's time at $100/hr you're less than 1/2 that! Very well done. Someone here in San Diego is selling a pair of 7000 hour 3208's for $19k/each!

Fuel usage: "new" vs "old" diesel engines

Yeah being new to the diesel world it's funny how different the discussion is around old gassers. While there's still emotional attachment to the antiques nobody's asking questions about whether they're more or less reliable or fuel efficient! Having futzed around with motorcycle carburetors...

    Solar Panel Disconnect switch?

Thanks for this, it all makes total sense and may have saved me from learning something the hard way.

    Solar Panel Disconnect switch?

This is what I did as well. The cables are pretty easy to disconnect for servicing. I'm not sure in what situation I would need an "emergency shutoff" for the PV. I do have a battery bank emergency shutoff switch.

    air-seawater vs air-coolant

Here's a rough guess: assume coolant is 90C and seawater is 20C, density of air goes from 1.2 to just under 1.0 (kg/m^3), so you get about 16% more oxygen for the fuel to react with in a given cylinder volume, which will translate to 16% more torque or HP if there aren't other constraints. So...

    Propulsion Cost: Sail vs. Trawler

As much as I love the FPB concept, I understand the limited appeal. There's an FPB64 that just showed up at our marina and while it's an impressive best, looking at it next to a similar price 64'... almost anything, it's pretty clear which one would be more comfortable under F8. The amount of...

    Propulsion Cost: Sail vs. Trawler

Thanks! 17.6kts at 2.2l/nm (1.7 mpg) is impressive. As is the ability to slow down to just under hull speed and get ~6kts at 1gph (6nmpg - about to what I quoted above for our 40' monohull sailboat). It also convinces me that the 0.5lph at 9kts for the Herley 3400 quoted can't be right...

    Propulsion Cost: Sail vs. Trawler

Yeah I agree with darkside - also, sailers often motor *really* slow. 6kts to windward is pretty good compared to 8kts at 40deg true, so expectations are different. A lot of catamarans will motor with only one engine, too. Tankage is often comparably light even on bluewater boats, so such...

    Propulsion Cost: Sail vs. Trawler

Thanks for posting this - very interesting. I do wonder what the net efficiency comparison would be between the spec'ed series hybrid (2x100kw electric + 120kW diesel genset) and, say, 2x80kW diesel direct drive. Or 2 equivalent Beta (parallel) hybrids. Direct drive (parallel hybrid) is...

    Propulsion Cost: Sail vs. Trawler

If you want to see what near zero emission cruising looks like, check out Sailing Uma on YouTube. They have a sailboat with electric propulsion (and pretty minimal solar). They use the electric to get in and out of marinas. It works for them because they have lots and lots of time. It...

Fuel usage: "new" vs "old" diesel engines

VW was cheating. They designed an engine control system that would detect when an emissions test was being performed, and enter in a special mode of operation that resulted in very low emissions to meet requirements. Then, when the car was being driven normally, emissions would increase...

Fuel usage: "new" vs "old" diesel engines

It is possible to find this data - I'm too lazy to search for it, but the answer is that the newer engines will pollute a lot less (criteria pollutants here, mainly NOx and PM but also unburned hydrocarbons). Honestly though, unlike CO2, criteria pollutants matter most in populated areas - in...

    Tach transducer

You got it! https://www.aetnaengineering.com/tachometer-mechanical-senders-and-magnetic-sensors/ You need the 8901 Sender, and the 8619 Adapter (under accessories) I just installed two of these. Not cheap but my original Motorola gauges were useless, and my alternator senders wouldn't work...

    Lehman 120 upgrade fuel filters

Did you replace the duplex filters with a single Racor? That looks appealing.

Fuel usage: "new" vs "old" diesel engines

I agree with your conclusion, but for the record, the reasoning behind the engine swap subsidy was not efficiency (which would reduce GHG), but criteria pollutants (NOx and PM mostly). As has been pointed out, there *is* actually a slight tradeoff between efficiency and criteria pollutants -...
