Boat Prices: Has the world changed????

Surprising how challenging it can be to get the actual LOA, LOD, WLL for vessels. This was very important for me for a while as I had a great 40' slip that could accommodate 43' max from tip to tail - and they measured. Our CHB 41 is 41' excluding the OEM anchor pulpit and swim step which...

    Fresh Water on-board

<spits out coffee> 30 minute showers on a boat?!? Good lord.

Amp Hours used overnight at anchor

We have a 660ah 12V bank & 700W flexible solar (3 years old now, realistically more like 350W.) Sounds like our loads are similar to the OP - medium sized Novacool fridge, misc. iPads, phones, laptops charging, LED lights, etc. Over the 6 months we cruised this summer we'd go to bed at around...

    Solar Panel Fires

He means that there does not exist a fuse which would protect against a short that occurs within the panel itself.

multiple issues create a wild night!

Just trying to understand the scope thing... Your post said 60' of chain in 12' of water - 12' at high tide? That can't be right; you must have 6' of draft, no? Even so that's 5:1 not 6:1. Then there's the height of your roller over the water - maybe 6' on your vessel? So in reality...

    Interesting boats

https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/1983-c-$-l-46-trawler-8484152/ This looks like a heck of a lot of boat for the $$ - lots of wood but in the PNW and in a boathouse! Just a gorgeous trawler.

    Solar Panel Fires

LOL! Maybe they shouldn't have put 100MW of CHICIRIS modules on the roof... Edit... should have gone with the TWELSEAVAN - much better quality.

    Solar Panel Fires

Doesn't identify the third party vendors or equipment types specified unfortunately, but likely a quality control issue with the installer. These are pretty different systems than what we've got on our boats, FWIW - much higher voltages.

Boat innovations you would implement today!

Very cool! Please keep us posted - anything published yet?

Boat innovations you would implement today!

There's also the run from the alternator(s) to the house bank. Also likely a (very small) efficiency gain from a 48V vs 24V inverter. I think 48V makes sense only if you're not going to do 24V. From my quick search you can find 48V thrusters & windlasses - those are very long cable runs...

Size-based maintenance cost differences between boats.

Illustrated perfectly by the preceding few posts: ~$40k/yr for a 48' SeaRay and sounds like a grand or so per year for Mako's 65 footer. My total costs for my old 41' trawler were around $25k the first year as I was in a fancy marina, fixed a bunch of stuff, added a water maker & solar, etc...

See post #26 above - I think the 48V alternator thing has been solved. https://balmar.net/96-series-48v-alternators/

Boat innovations you would implement today!

Not wanting to derail this thread, but for the record electric motors (which I'm 100% "pro") are already extremely efficient, as are power electronics. Unfortunately the laws of physics are such that it takes a *lot* of energy (electric or diesel or wind) to push a big boat through the water...

Boat innovations you would implement today!

Looks like Balmar makes 60 and 100A 48V alternators (that's 2.9 and 4.8kW!) https://balmar.net/96-series-48v-alternators/ Do 48V windlasses and thrusters exist? Alternatively I suppose they could use 120VAC? I love the idea of a large 48VDC LFP house bank.

Wanted: Cheoy Lee 61 or Hatteras LRC 58/65

Any update? I love those big Cheoy Lees. This one in Seattle is no longer listed as "Sale Pending" so might be back on the market as well. https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/1977-cheoy-lee-flush-deck-lrc-trawler-8357929/

    Stabilizers: A Must for Passage-Making?

I did not know this - why are fish placed abaft the beam and not on center? To avoid stuffing the bow?

On the hook? West Coast USA

Good call. I always liked idea of the Farrier/Corsair trailerable trimarans as well for that kind of use if you're up for the minimalist lifestyle. They sail really really well & are lighter than the keelboats, so maybe could get away with an F150.

On the hook? West Coast USA

Quick thoughts: - Friend with a boat? Maybe join a boating club locally? This can be a great way to get out on the water for low $$. - I know lots of people have had fun on Mac 26's but I'd look elsewhere; they're sort of the Amphicar of boating - bad at both sailing and motoring... I'd pick...

Replace PV panel input with Lifepo4 battery

Yeah the 5A (at 24V) is probably enough from your description, but I'd be a little concerned about the autopilot draw discharging your start batteries over time. If you truly only use it occasionally no big deal, but you might consider a higher power unit to put that worry out of mind (and for...

    Dogs on boats

We're just back from 5 weeks out in the Channel Islands & Catalina. 2 dogs & 3 kids plus friends. Lots of excrement. We always bag our dog droppings & put them in a plastic bag under our bow pulpit to be disposed of whenever there's a trash can to be found. If there were no trash cans to...

    Interesting boats

I think I'd take her over something like a Nordhavn 62... if I could find a spot to keep her. Honestly I don't know that I could own that boat if it cost $1.00; 85' slips are tricky to come by in San Diego from what I hear. Of course if I owned that boat it wouldn't be to stay in one spot...

Replace PV panel input with Lifepo4 battery

What you need I think is a 24V battery charger that runs on 48V Here's one for $67 by Victron that might work. It's possible that a 100/20 mppt controller could do the job but it's not really built for it, and more expensive than the option I outlined above.

    Stabilizers: A Must for Passage-Making?

My boat is about 30,000lbs so that would be 600#. I don't know that I'd want 4 people running to the low side of my flybridge in synch with a scary slow roll, but I see your point that it's probably pretty marginal in terms of AVS. I don't think paravanes for my boat would come in at...
