Hurricane Ian was Tropical Storm Ian was Tropical Depression 09

Like most things when it comes to my weather comprehension, I find myself nodding and looking serious while listening to Tropical Tidbits, then realizing that I have no idea what he's talking about. I still enjoy the videos though. Maybe I can hope that a little bit is sinking in each time?

    Newbie from Newport Beach, CA

Been a while but last time I checked availability for smaller slips (25-35') seemed much better than 40'+. You're in a great spot to set up for weekend trips to Catalina in a smaller vessel. Heck, I had a beer with a tall Swedish guy and his wife in Two Harbors who'd explored all around Cat...

    Buy Now???

Lots of discussion on this topic here and on other forums. The response that resonates most with me is this: how much is missing a season with to you? We have kids - our oldest just started HS. I don't know how many more seasons we'll get in before they won't tolerate spending the whole...

Welcome! Are you new to boating? Try to get as much time on different sorts of boats as possible before starting your search in earnest. One's priorities and need/want lists typically change pretty dramatically over the first few years of owning and using a boat.

    Interesting boats

Yeah I'd buy 1.1l/nm at 7kts for the Schionning power cat, but at 15 that sounds very low. Maybe per engine?

That mileage seems too good to be true, no?

Sounds like you just need an older, bigger, more run down boat :)

    Retired Life in Mexico

Hah! Don't get me started... We keep our boat in America's Cup Harbor. I've called the Harbor Police three times in the past six months (not sure I've called the SD Police ever). One was a guy who had a woman (girlfriend/wife) trapped in a porta-potty screaming at her & her yelling for...

    Interesting boats

Interesting for sure. What were they thinking with that berth setup and galley layout? It's like they got through the naval architecture piece and then stopped. Seems like a great platform though & impressive efficiency if true. Not sure how to fix the berth - does not look very...

    Retired Life in Mexico

One other note on medical care: when I went (1 year in MX and Central America on motorcycle) I got an emergency travel insurance policy. It was very inexpensive. Basically if there's an emergency that can't be treated locally they will medevac you back the the US. This was 20 years a go mind...

Adobada! Mmmmm.... Tortillas de arena? I'm still not used to the northern MX wheat tortillas vs southern MX corn, but they are delicious as well. Man does that look good. Edit: in Mexico City they call wheat tortilla tacos "Tacos Arabes" or "Arabic Tacos"; some sort of cultural mashup...

    Retired Life in Mexico

My wife is a Tapatia (from Guadalajara). I've been to every state in MX on my motorcycle & other forms of transport, but not yet by boat. She might take issue with Peter's assertion the Oaxaca is the heart of MX cuisine - but so would the people of Puebla, Mexico City, and probably most...

    Starlink

Hey, is Elon saying our trawlers are slow? I take offense at that. 6-8 knots is still "in motion"! Insulting!

    Starlink

I don’t care about using while underway being cut off but if it doesn’t work while swinging at anchor it’s pretty useless for a cruiser.

    She said yes!

Hah! Congratulations & hope you've got the dosh to meet her expectations :) You could always try pitching the advantages of a smaller boat (of which there are many) for a retired cruising couple. My wife is good with the idea as well, but we've a ways to go as our youngest is only 8 - so...

    Lehman oil cooler hose

That's a great solution. I totally agree that the hydraulic hoses are massive overkill for a <100psi system. Wish I had gone that direction.

    Interesting boats

I love it - purposeful yet elegant. Pricey, teak decks (look great tho), in AU, and no stabilizers. Really cool ship all things considered. Think she'll sell at that price?

    Lehman oil cooler hose

I think the oil cooler and oil filter are NPT fittings. Don't be like me. When replacing my coolers I figured I'd replace the old lines as well. I stupidly just unscrewed the hoses from the cooler and had a shop duplicate them. The fittings were some weird British taper thing, and very...

    Interesting boats

That was my thought as well! That's a pretty strong asking price - should be able to produce a good set of pics to justify it. Also not sure what 2.5 staterooms means. What's a 1/2 stateroom?

    Fresh Water on-board

I have a super-efficient 12VDC Spectra Venture 200t. 8gal/hr & draws only 10A (120W) so very easily powered by my solar array. I run it during the day mainly because I like it to be dead quiet at night, but I could run it through the night if need be (660ah FLA bank). It's a good solution...

    Fresh Water on-board

When I'm solo I use zero gallons per day on laundry :) With the wife, 2 dogs, 3-4 kids on board we are at 40 gallons per day; about 10hr of water maker run time every 2 days to stay even. 95% of laundry gets done ashore; we've got a little manual unit we use in a pinch to extend our time out...

    Another Damm Sailboat!

In (possible) defense of the sailboat, it appears it had a tug escort? Not sure what that means, but shouldn't the tugs have been responsible for keeping this from happening? Wow - that's a nice bit of pedantry there! :) Is that true of any stationary object, or just moored/anchored vessels...

BBB 5/16" chain vs HT 5/16" (G4) chain

It does depend on the specific gypsy/windlass: I went through this when I bought my boat, as it came with a 5/16" BBB rode. My Ideal gypsy was skipping - thought it might be worn or the chain stretched, but it turns out it was the wrong chain for the gypsy...

multiple issues create a wild night!

Glad you got the mechanical issue sorted - combination of dragging anchor and losing power is quite a pickle & I can only imagine the stress level it would induce! Especially amazing since it sounds like the transmission failure was totally independent & *just happened* to occur at the absolute...

    Pepwave Router

Do they allow you to move that service around or is it geofenced to a specific address? Unlimited bandwidth or a max MB/mo?
