    1977 CHB Trawler

I'd probably go that route if I were to replace my water heater. When the engine is running electricity is plentiful, so no big advantage to capturing a bit of waste engine heat. I have a DC boat (no gen or inverter) & have modified my heater to use DC as well.

    Lehman temp sensors

The stock wiring for the FL's is to run the oil pressure and temp alarm in series to a buzzer at the helm & another at the flybridge. Neither of my buzzers worked when I bought the boat, so I re-wired new loud BlueSeas piezo alarms at the helm and flybridge. With these there will be no doubt...

Hmm... you made it farther than me - I was lost at $5.3m! I'm sure if you offered $5.5m they'd take off the wood decks for you. It's only (imaginary) money :)

Overkill in boat selection for normal cruising

Congrats - that's a wonderful & inspiring story! Please post some pics & keep us updated on your progress updating her. I love those old Hatts. The grandfather of my wife (of only 20 years) has a '76 53MY stretched to 60' that he bought new & my wife lived on for a year in MX when she was 8...

Cheaper than a bow/stern thruster install! :) Very nice - looks reasonably priced if you're paying in Euros or USD.

Overkill in boat selection for normal cruising

There's a (possibly apocryphal) story that Enzo Ferrari said: the only true American sports car is the Jeep. Meaning (in my interpretation) that it's a vehicle designed with no practical considerations beyond the owner's enjoyment. Nobody buys cars or boats because of "needs", we buy because...

    2006 TMC Alloy Explorer/Trawler Joubert 72' France

Is there a full listing somewhere you could link to in this thread (apologize if I missed it)? That might help as well. She looks fantastic for the right buyer!

    Interesting boats

She is a beaut. Quite a high price though, no? Interesting to compare to this Cheoy Lee 55 at 40% of the price. Not as much range but 3x the interior room and what looks like a vastly better engine room.

    Buy Now???

I think a lot of the conflicting viewpoints around debt come from the spread between rational and emotional behavior. Rationally, a low interest rate tax deductible mortgage against an appreciating asset like a home makes a ton of sense. But for a lot of people, it inflates their perceived...

Overkill in boat selection for normal cruising

He did mention one interesting thing; that his flybridge is their least utilized space. Didn't say it outright but sounded like he wished he'd not added the flybridge in retrospect. I'm not surprise he thinks his boat is perfect - he'd done tens of thousands of miles before in a large Hinkley...

An Achievable Dream: Expedition Yacht episode This is an interesting video in the context of this discussion. I've watched it & a couple other videos in his series. They are incredibly comprehensive & thoughtful. They are also... somewhat paralyzing Not meaning to throw shade here...

    Buy Now???

Yeah, 10% inflation would be quite extreme over a full year. Also, note that 1-year T-bills, which used to yield basically zero, are at 4% now. So you don't have to have the cash sitting in a no-yield bank account. I stand by my previous statement: if you can predict the future, adjust your...

Were you in Cat Harbor mid to late August? There was a nice Helmsman on a mooring ball while we were there; meant to swing by but never did.

I missed the HGG reference! Thought you were just a huge Neil Young fan.

    Buy Now???

If you are confident in your forward view on the market, you should be betting on it with your financial portfolio, not your boat purchase timing. If you're right, the gain/loss in boat value should be immaterial.

    Paravane stabilisers actual loads.

Drag Coefficient This gives the equation to calculate the force (in Newtons). No time to do it myself but I'd use a turbulent flow flat plate Cd. You can look up the density of water & all the required unit conversions. You can estimate the area of the plate. Note that if you want to...

    What's your dream boat?

That's funny. I wonder if there's a subset of us who fit that category - part of me thinks that my dream would be to motor over to Driscoll's yard with a blank check and say: "fix everything! Paint everything! Add stabilizers! And a hardtop over the flybridge with 1000W of rigid solar...

Cars are no more rational purchases than boats. Otherwise we'd all be driving 10 year old Corollas (and not owning boats at all :) )

    Interesting boats

Yeah - that said, anyone buying a $70k car to save money is probably deluding themselves. I own a Tesla btw & absolutely love it - I know a Corolla has a lower TCOO. Every time I run the numbers on pure electric I come to that same conclusion. It's much more plausible with sail (see Sailing...

    Interesting boats

I see sometimes in Yachtworld they think of each space as a "cabin". So it might be they're counting the 2 staterooms plus the pilot house, salon & dining room. Drives me crazy that you can't properly search YW based on # of staterooms as that's critical for us as a family of 5! But yeah -...

    Interesting boats

That looks like a great family expedition boat - wife would love all the cabins; she's constantly frustrated by larger boats with only 2-3. Agree the pilothouse windows aren't the prettiest. The topsides remind me of a reviewer's comment on the Volvo 240 - looks like it was designed with an...

To Repair or Sell Grand Banks 36 Classic

Running a diesel through a transmission to a propellor to push a boat off-center through the water, then slowing down said boat via another propellor on the other side, through a transmission to a generator... is about the least efficient way imaginable to charge batteries.

    Solar panel wiring question

Following. I also used marine duplex (8/2) direct to the MC4 panel connections. Honestly hadn't thought of the UV exposure; mostly inside or under the bimini but I wonder if a bit of conduit might be in order for the balance.
