Replace turbo oil return pipe with hose

The turbo has already been sent out - to workbench in my garage. I'm rebuilding it myself with a kit that cost about $100 and includes new bearings, seals, etc. I just noticed this turbo vendor sells a specific oil return line: ATP ATP-OIL-024 Hi Temp Rubber/Silicone Oil Drain Hose - 5/8" (-10...

Replace turbo oil return pipe with hose

I have a rigid steel pipe that bolts to the bottom of the turbo and leads to the crankcase. There's a rubber coupler that connects the bottom of the pipe to a nipple on the crankcase. This is on a 1978 Perkins T6.354. The pipe is about 3 feet long and has several tight bends. I would like to...

Does anyone have the specs for a blow by test or compression test of the T6.354? I have blue smoke and want to rule out the rings and valves. Thanks, Robert

    Raw Water Flush

I'm assuming the breather line, which goes to turbo inlet, should be plugged, and I should use the dipstick tube. Or I could splice in a manometer to the breather line, but I'm not convinced the pressure in the head is the same as the pressure in the case. I'd like to do it under load and I'm...

    Raw Water Flush

How should I do a blowby test? Is it just at idle or when the boost pressure kicks in?

    Raw Water Flush

After 30 years of direct raw water cooled outboards and outdrives in saltwater I am delighted to have an engine that is fresh water cooled with dedicated copper heat exchangers. I'd spent so many hours at launch ramps flushing the salt of engines using the dang ear muffs. Finally I said I'm...

    Raw Water Flush

In part humor, how about one large annually replaced but cheap heat exchanger for the raw raw side, then a closed circuit fresh water loop on the original raw side. But then if have to flush the raw raw side with fresh water... Maybe I'll just go air cooled.

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

I didn't mean flush the whole circuit, I just meant the exhaust manifold. Seems like there could be a corrosion issue with the salt water. I'll look for the thread you mention.

Seems crazy there's not even a zinc on that manifold. If I add it to the freshwater circuit should I flush it with acid?

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

What's the best way to do a blowby test on the t6.354? Also, I have a pyrometer and at WOT for thirty minutes it will approach 900f. At 1800 rpm cruise it's around 450f. Does that seem normal? At WOT I experience stream but have checked all temps with an infra red and everything is normal. I had...

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

Regarding an oil change, has anyone has success with sucking the oil out through the turbo return line, where it meets the sump? I don't think I get enough old oil out from suctioning at the dipstick. I'm contemplating removing the oil return line and inserting a suction hose down into the sump...

    Engine failure while cruising

On my way to O'Reillys to get the supplies. Would a cheap siphon tube with a primer bulb work with diesel, and would you splice that into the lifter pump? There's a spin on filter between the lifter pump and primary pump but no water separator. My fear is introducing air. The Racor is between...

Jleonard, again you're a source of super info on the Mainship!

    Engine failure while cruising

Yes. Each tank is separately vented and I could feel airflow from the vent when filling the tank. When I first got the boat a year+ ago I went out in rough water with a buddy in another boat in case the filter clogged and I needed a tow back. The PO hadn't used the boat in several months and...

    Engine failure while cruising

Great idea. Ill get that setup. I'd like to figure a way to put it on a scale to measure fuel consumption at different RPMs. Suppose I'll have to splice into the fuel return line as well. I'm just kinda paranoid about getting air into the system.

    Engine failure while cruising

Yesterday when cruising at 1800 RPM my single engine 1978 Mainship 34 shut down. Just prior to shut down the engine surged and hesitated like it was out of fuel. At the time I was running on the port fuel tank only because I wanted to equalize the volume in both tanks. The starboard tank was at...

Jleonard, I'm also going to add the keel fairing you describe, so in theory should I go up two inches? I really wish I had a variable pitch prop. And thanks for clarifying the WOT max rpm.

Is 2600 RPMs at WOT too fast for a 1977 T6.354? This is underway with normal load. Thanks, Robert

I'm liking the trim tabs idea. Which vendor did you go with, and how much did that cost? I'm contemplating an extension of two feet to increase planning surface.

JLeonard, Thanks for tips, I actually bookmarked your keel fairing post a while ago and have a separate thread on the Yahoo Mainship list for hull modifications. One of the PO's of my boat installed wedges however I believe they were incorrectly installed under the transom. This weekend I'm...

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

What are the best upgrades for the Perkins T6.354, or is there a page dedicated to this topic already? With over 1M motors produced I'm assuming there's a lot of knowledge about keeping these engines in top shape, optimizing reliability, efficiency, performance and maintainability. For...
