    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

I use it all sometimes. My typical cruising day includes a few sprints at WOT, usually no more 20 minutes each. With a clogged system I was still seeing a 10 degree temp drop across the intercooler, raw water.

    Low cost pool heat exchangers

They offer stainless and titanium. I think those specs are for the SS versions. For the ti version they have: Applications: Hot Tub/Spa/Swimming Pool Heating Marine (Salt Water) Applications

    Low cost pool heat exchangers

Is there any reason why a low cost titanium shell and tube heat exchanger should not be used to cool a marine diesel? These units are primarily for salt water pools with chlorine but they state they can be used for marine cooling, including oil and salt water...

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

Excellent info. Did you notice a change in the temp at WOT? I have a ton of questions, did you have to make any enhancements to the cooling system? I've heard about the coolant not flowing until the thermostat opens and overheating the manifold. Also there was a concern of introducing bubbles...

On your tip I researched them. They look like the ideal solution but too much work for me to install and quite pricey.

A Perkins water pump drive coupling question

Did you look in mcmaster-carr? They seem to have everything.

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

Generally $40 - $80. Anyone seen a spec for the Sherwood pump on the T6.354? The last time I had my pump out I didn't replace it due to time constraints but the tips looked blunted. I wonder if that's shortening the life of the impellor.

    Perkins T6.354M heater hose attachment???

My setup is the same and also produces crazy hot water. You might try disconnecting the lines and running a garden hose through it to see how well it flows. There's a distance between my hot water heater and the engine, I'd check for a kink in the line also.

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

I was sceptical but after seeing the inside of the air charge cooler I'm leaning towards this more. My setup is complicated because the air charge cooler is on suction side, so I'd have to bypass the raw water pump somehow. And the reason I got this boat in the first place was because I was...

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

I'm a bit anxious about the exhaust manifold, since it's slowly corroding away and once it leaks the engine it ruined. I pressure tested it, but that just means it's OK at the moment. Is there any way to gauge it's internal condition? I can't think of a worse situation, with extremely hot...

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

Great info. I did the same with my water pump and had to put nuts on the backside since the threads were shot. Are you replacing the water pump cam? Mine looked worn but didn't have a spare. Regarding the blow-by, I took the breather hose and stuck it in a big garbage bag at 1000 RPMs in gear...

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

Thanks J, I should have noted that. I agree about the exhaust manifold. And regards to the air charge cooler, the raw water is killing the cast iron housing. I've got it on my workbench and took at least a pound of scale out it, then wire wheeled and epoxied it. I'm also adding a zinc, although...

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

Sounds like too much to justify it. What about a generic SS heat exchanger and a separate freshwater circuit for the exhaust manifold? Would SS hold up to hot saltwater? I can get a generic electric hot water pump used in automotive heater systems. Could I just add a zinc to the manifold?

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

I'd like to put my exhaust manifold in the fresh water circuit. I've seen a post at the yahoo group with some of the technical details but I don't know if anybody else has done it or if it's a good modification in the long run...

Bowman Air Charge Cooler: Need help reassembling

I wire-wheeled the inside of the cast iron housing, one of the nipples had significant corrosion and it was disheartening to watch it disappear under the wirewheel. After getting down to solid metal all over I coated everything with epoxy. You could tell is soaked down into the pores in the...

Replace turbo oil return pipe with hose

I haven't gotten into mine yet so I don't know how different it is, but from looking at the parts kit they seem similar: If mine is significantly different I'll post the changes.

    Stern thruster

that's scary - I can't imagine arriving at my boat and seeing the stern thruster running. Any idea how long it was running? Is it electric?

Make your own exhaust risers and mixers

Nice job. I did a similar but simpler version with my Perkins. Purchased the SS elbows and piping online and TIG welded it up. Total cost was around $150, including the argon. If I bought the OEM for the 1977 Perkins it would have been at least $2k. I mostly followed the original pattern...

    Exhaust hose

I worry more about my exhaust hose than anything else on my boat. It's a small layer that keeps my boat from sinking. I think it's also fragile because of the hot exhaust gas.

Bowman Air Charge Cooler: Need help reassembling

Thanks - for the pressure testing what's the recommended PSI? We have water pressure here that's 120psi and 80psi. I was thinking I'd cap one end and attach the other to the garden hose. I can't imagine the water pressure gets anywhere near that when running. I thought the design seemed...

Bowman Air Charge Cooler: Need help reassembling

It all started out so innocently. I removed the Bowman air charge cooler (intercooler) to take home and clean. The plan was just to soak it in Barnacle Buster to dissolve the deposits. Then I came across this thread at ybw.com that made it seem easy to disassemble. Now I have mess on my...
