    3m 5200

5200 takes days to fully cure, so it's not great for a quick, on-the-water fix. I have found the much cheaper PL Premium is great for bonding panels but not for things below the water line. PL has more talc than 5200 and it's less gooey, but there's no solution for everything. Most of my...

Old fat men and engine rooms

Wow, you guys have some nice engine rooms - it's this kind of envy that gets me into trouble. Last night I was considering laying down some indoor-outdoor carpeting along the sides of my single Perk but then thought I'd be ridiculed for having carpet in my engine room. But art? That exudes...

Diesel Coolant: OAT vs HOAT; Red vs Blue?

Nalcool is HOAT. So the forum has several votes for standard coolant (3306), one for OAT, and now one for HOAT. Now I understand a recent article I read about different coolant types, tap water vs distilled and said none of it really matters as long as the coolant is tested periodically and...

Diesel Coolant: OAT vs HOAT; Red vs Blue?

But which spec to use, 3306 or 6210? 3306 is old style coolant and is found everywhere. Every coolant at the parts store is 3306 and there was one jug of 6210 that was very expensive. This is why I'm unsure. People say buy traditional and OAT, which is 6210...

    D6210 is OAT More confused

Diesel Coolant: OAT vs HOAT; Red vs Blue?

What's "lorn"? I saw somebody checking the voltage between the coolant and the negative battery terminal. Surprisingly it was .3 volts with old coolant. That tells me something galvanic is happening, but I wouldn't know if it's the protective effect of the zinc or bad corrosion happening. Seems...

    $8 boost guage

EGT at full throttle for 30 minutes is about 920F. I'm waiting for paint to dry before putting this all back together. I'll post the findings on boost. My boat though is a bit under-propped and can reach over 2500 RPMs. I don't exceed 2400, but that's not actually WOT. If I increased the...

Diesel Coolant: OAT vs HOAT; Red vs Blue?

I'm about to reassemble my freshwater cooling system and am utterly confused as to which coolant to use. This is a 1977 Perkins T6.354. Recent articles on diesel coolant state a special "OAT" formulation is required to prevent pitting, especially with wet sleeved engines. I believe this motor...

    DIY Turbo Rebuild: 3LD?

It's really not that hard. At first I just took photos as I took it apart. Then I found the directions in the Perkins shop manual. I got the kit from China, on Aliexpress after searching for Schweitzer 3ld. The kit was like $75 and showed up within a week. Definitely within reach of a...

    Steam in the exhaust

I'm sure we'll chime in if you start a new thread. BTW, if you're rebuilding why not just do the sleeves and rings, as I'm guessing those would be the same. I'm looking at the workshop manual, and it includes contra rotating engines. The specs for pistons, valves, rings, bearings, etc make no...

    Steam in the exhaust

Very interesting, I had no idea the raw water temp increase should only be +20. When I get everything back together that's the first thing I'll check.

    $8 boost guage

I don't like spending money but I have a boat, so I have to get creative. OK, so it's a bit more than eight bucks bc i had the low pressure gauge already. I'm rebuilding my air charge cooler and tapped a 1/4 npt hole in one side. Then I ordered a SS plug plus a barbed fitting and some pvc hose...

    Steam in the exhaust

140 is about the temp of the water just prior to injection to the elbow. I'm eager to get engine back together after all this work: Rebuild air charge unit (extremely scaled) Remove, disassemble, acid clean heat exchanger Remove and clean out oil heat exchanger. Remove and clean *all* pipes...

    Steam in the exhaust

Thanks! I don't think I'm seeing near that at the exhaust outlet.

Air leak on raw water suction strainer

True, considering the cover is about 8" in diameter, or about 48 square inches, and a suction of 1 psi would result in 48 pounds pulling it down. But I also think there's a plastic lip on the housing that stops the lid from compressing the gasket any more, and I had some sandy crud in there.

    Is 3gph the spec for a t6.354? (I don't have a dss)

Air leak on raw water suction strainer

I have the cooling system apart in my 1978 Mainship and was farting around with the raw water hose. I decided I'd open the sea valve and blow into it, to see if there was any resistance from fouling on the intake screen under the water. To my surprise there was air blowing out where the lid of...

    Steam in the exhaust

Sounds like I shouldn't worry about it as long as everything else is normal. Just seems weird that other semi displacements cruising nearby don't have the same.

    Steam in the exhaust

Is it ever normal to have stream coming from the exhaust? I have a 1978 Mainship with a Perkins T6.354. At WOT I see lots of stream coming from the exhaust. The cooling system is clear and clean, the engine temps are normal using an IR sensor at several locations. The EGT is 900 degrees f at...

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

I wonder if I could swap the heat exchanger for the one from a Cat 3056 and put the exhaust manifold into the freshwater circuit. My existing exchanger is in excellent shape and I just disassembled and cleaned it out.

    Repower Options

Please excuse my ignorance - but is a belt-driven raw water pump common? Is there any consensus on electric raw and fresh water pumps? I see lots of people changing out the belt driven for an electric one for race applications but I don't how that translates to the marine world. With all the...

    Repower Options

I have a Perkins T6.354 but I would opt for a 6bta because they are so common and proven. There are tons of options for the 6bt and you'll be able to find parts and know how if you find yourself in Sitka or San Francisco.

    Perkins T6.354 Best Practice

I tested the temp on each side of the cooler. Air entering the cooler was 80F and exiting was 70F, however that was at a low power setting.
