Appreciate the words of encouragement! I'm currently planning the next leg. I also have Crescent City as a goal (46 hr run) with off-ramps available at Garibaldi, Cape Lookout (anchorage), Newport, and Winchester Bay. I'll probably throw in another between Winchester and Crescent City. Friday...

Back in Astoria on the boat. Fortunately one of our neighbours came over during the windstorm on Saturday and lashed everything down as best he could. One of the plexiglass visors on the flybridge was smashed into a dozen pieces and the stitching failed on some of the bimini pieces but I haven't...

In other news, I made the mistake of leaving by Bimini up... A major storm just blew through the marina and apparently it's been damaged. I got a guy to take it all down and stow it, but I won't know the extent of the damage until I get back to Astoria (currently up in Portland enjoying a couple...

Spoke with Brian at American Diesel. Even though I had been running with too much oil, he thinks it's extremely unlikely that the rear main oil seal is leaking. I've got a mechanic in Astoria that will hopefully be available Monday or Tuesday to begin the disassembly and get to the bottom of...

Thanks CB. I'm sure I'll have some questions when the time comes.

We are now in Astoria! Does anyone know where I can buy an "I crossed the Columbia River bar with 50 yards visibility and survived" t-shirt? The fog was brutal! That's two socked-in bars in a row. I guess that's Faugust.

Well, my oil problems are not resolved. Currently underway and the engine pan is filling up again. I took a good video of the drip and will post it once I'm in Astoria with WiFi. It appears to be coming from the seal between the sump and the transmission. Is that the rear oil seal? Also, thanks...

Glad to hear the boat has a good reputation! We definitely got the impression that she was well maintained as well, hence why she ended up being the one we chose. Thanks for following!

Update time! So the original plan was to hop from Neah Bay to La Push but I got frowns all around from the other transients in Neah Bay every time I mentioned La Push, including a few mentions of fishing nets blocking the entrance. Based on that we decided to attempt our first overnight passage...

We've been at Neah Bay for a couple of days now and I've asked a couple of people about taking that passage inside Tatoosh and I'm being told to avoid it. We actually walked out to Cape Flattery yesterday and I saw the passage for myself (albeit on a rough day). I think I'm going to take the...

Found some discussion about it here (Avoiding Crab Pots, Washington Coast - Cruisers & Sailing Forums). Chances are they'll be less crab pots, but they're still be something to avoid. Good to know though.

Well, I changed the fuel pump with a new one but unfortunately the new one had a fuel leak from the diaphragm. I put the old one back on but kept the new gasket and it looks like my oil leak has stopped. I'm now also operating with the oil level below that higher etched in mark and during...

So here's a picture of my dipstick. When I add 12 quarts of oil to the engine I get nowhere near the etched in mark between "MAX" and "MIN." Unfortunately at the last oil change I just added what was needed to get to that mark (approx 15 quarts) and didn't pay attention to whether 12 quarts...

How do you dispose of a used filter that is soaked with fuel? Also what do you do with the fuel that you drain from the bottom of the filter?

The passage seems fairly clear on the charts, and I'm only drawing 4.5 feet. I guess I'll go for it!

We are now in Port Angeles. I took this picture about two hours into the trip. You can see where oil has been dripping onto the soak-up pad in the pan under the engine. The drip is perfectly in line with the fuel pump and I didn't see anything leaking above it, so it's gotta be the fuel pump...

I've got a good hand pump that sucks right from the bottom so it's not difficult to empty the sump. I will follow your advice at the next oil change. I have a feeling the dip stick is not marked correctly.

I have 400 gallons of diesel and consume approx 2.6 gallons per hr at 7 knots, so I can go about 700nm on 2/3 of my fuel capacity. Yes, I was hoping we'd take off about a week earlier but it just wasn't doable. Looks like the weather is closing in next week as well. Anyway, we're not on a...

We're on our way to Port Angeles today and will be there until the 19th. What do you mean by "safe range?" Max sea conditions?
