Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

120 Lehman as well? Are your IR readings the same as what I was getting?

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

Well that's good news then! Time to break out the multimeter. I wanted to re-wire the 12V system on the boat anyway... :)

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

Hey folks, here's an update. Took the boat out for a spin. Had a steady 200F on the temp gauges at 1800 RPM (used to see 185F but at least it wasn't climbing). Had 210F on the temp gauges at 2100 RPM. IR readings at 1800 RPM (with 0.95 emissivity on the gun): 180F on the header tank, and 175F...

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

How much pressure build up were you seeing, out of curiosity? I've completed the test and the gauge stayed at zero, so it looks like I don't have a head gasket problem.

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

Just to clarify... Obviously pressure will build in a perfectly healthy engine as the coolant temp increases. Is the purpose of this test to check that pressure is not still building after the coolant reaches a steady temp at idle?

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

That is a very good idea. I already have the pressure test kit. I will try bleeding air a few more times, and then try the pressure test with the engine running.

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

I added an "Edit" to my post, suggesting the same theory. I think that's what it is - I'm glad you agree. I very likely have air in my system because I just changed out the coolant yesterday and have only run the engine a couple of times, since. It probably stops spurting because that...

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

RTF, I had never run the engine with the radiator cap off until I replaced the FW pump last year and carried out the air purge procedure. That being said, I don't remember if I saw that spray or not, at that time. Just to add to this, I just ran the engine again. It immediately started...

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

Here's a video of the spray that I occasionally see from the radiator with the cap off. I just started the engine cold and it did this. It seems random as to whether it will do this or not. If it was a head gasket, wouldn't it be continuous and not stop? Any ideas as to what the cause of this...

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

Well, I replaced the gasket at the exhaust manifold / elbow. There was no obvious damage to the gasket. Regardless, hopefully that improves the situation. Luckily did not break off any bolt heads.

Thanks Tator - that supports my suspicions. I will have the elbow off today for a look. Will post an update with my findings.

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

I will definitely not be opening the exhaust manifold bleed while the engine is running, or while stopped and hot, as per the warning in the manual. Will the air actually purge itself out the overflow? I don't see why it wouldn't, but that's not in accordance with the air purge procedure as per...

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

Thanks Jay. Maybe my thermostat was occasionally opening (hence the spray), whereas yours didn't, and that's why you never saw the spray. Thinking about it now, when I brought the engine up to 1500 RPM, that would obviously increase the engine operating temp. From there, suddenly bringing it...

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

I just replaced the cooling hoses (freshwater side) on my Lehman and I want to ensure I'm completely purging all air from the system. I followed the instructions in the manual, which are: - Fill the system and purge the exhaust manifold while doing so. - Top up the expansion tank. - Run the...

Hi Tom & Kay. Just stumbled across your thread. Had no idea you'd be heading out on another trip north so quickly! Looks like an awesome one. Enjoy and keep the posts coming!

How to open this raw water strainer?

Haha, thanks everyone for the comments. For what it's worth, it was (removed?) and serviced in a boatyard in 2016. Roger, hose. That could probably use a replacement. I'll get on that ASAP. I'll try giving the cover a tap to see if it pops off. Yes, the valve is on the inboard side, not seen...

How to open this raw water strainer?

I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove/clean this strainer on my Lehman's raw water intake thru-hull. Any ideas?

    Let's talk tools!

I always seem to find a use for a strap-wrench, beyond the standard oil-filter removal application. I have a small one and a large. Also, for cleaning my raw water heat exchanger, I've graduated from bamboo skewers to the smallest diameter dowel you can find at a hardware store. They're much...

    VacuFlush Spitting Up

Alright, ANOTHER update. Yes, the ball seal required replacing, but I still found the ball wasn't shutting completely. I tore down the whole thing to the point where I could remove the ball, and I found that the cam (this part...

    VacuFlush Spitting Up

Just wanted to provide an update for anyone reading this thread in the future. Adjusting the strength of the vacuum didn't resolve the problem - only temporarily - and having the vacuum that weak only compromised system performance. I ended up changing the ball seal (the seal between the ball...

    VacuFlush Spitting Up

You nailed it. I googled how to do it and found a YouTube video: () All I had to do was adjust the spring on the microswitch that determines when the vacuum pump shuts off. The switch is on the vacuum tank. I adjusted it to reduce the strength of the vacuum. Problem solved. :thumb: :dance...

    VacuFlush Spitting Up

Unfortunately the mechanism is operated electrically, so there's no way to throttle it (that I'm aware of).

    VacuFlush Spitting Up

I have a VacuFlush (Dometic brand) toilet (2012 install) that spits up when flushed. It did this since we bought the boat, then it stopped doing it for about three months, now it's doing it again. It flushes fine, it's just that when the ball valve initially opens, it sprays the contents of the...

Victoria, BC to the Sea of Cortez

There's a lot of coastline left to explore, so I don't know if we'd do the pacific coast again (except for the parts we didn't get to yet), but we'd definitely recommend it to anyone with a capable boat. We were certainly in a rush to begin the trip, so there are some things I'd have done...
