Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

Got word early this week that our new fridge/freezer was en route from Seattle and could arrive soon, so had to shift gears and quickly build a platform for the new fridge (the new fridge is much shorter than the previous one). We decided to go with a platform because it's a drawer style...

Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

Port side all cleaned up and ready for screw-hole filling. Problem is it's too cold for the epoxy and gelcoat to cure, so I'll just continue with prepping the deck.

Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

Yes, new washers. I took them all out and reinstalled them today. Cleaned out the seats as best I could. Gave the injectors a tap as you recommended. Good news, got her started and everything looks good. She was idling smooth so that's a good sign. Valve clearances next...

Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

Got the fuel injectors back yesterday. Opening pressure was low on all of them, two were leaking fuel at the threads, and one of the nozzles had to be replaced. Reinstalled them but couldn't start the engine. Heard lots of air hissing by the injectors... I think the problem is that I failed to...

    Flybridge spray shield 390 2000

Yeah we had a guy in Mexico make one in his garage. Basically took a torch to heat it up and match the curve to the shattered pieces of our old one.

Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

I think we were just so excited to be going to Mexico (and every port in between) that we didn't mind hand steering. It gave us something to do. We'll be doing the trip counter-clockwise around the island, so we'll be coming down the outside in late summer. The mattress, including custom...

Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

Very nice! Just curious, how did you secure the pedestals for the helm seats? Did you have to bolt right through the deck? I'm assuming I'm going to have to pull back the material on the ceiling of the saloon and bolt right through.

Flybridge demolition underway! Before: After day one: There's A LOT of room up top. We're really going to have to put some thought into how to best use the space.

Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

I'm project-managing the work myself, so I'm in the process of sourcing quotes for the various jobs. Westport is great in that they allow outside contractors to come in and work, so you're not limited to their pool of staff, not that there's anything wrong with the work they do. In the end I...

Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

Booked the haul out today. May 2nd at Westport Marina in North Saanich. Heard good things from some of the residents of our marina. That will give us nearly a month to get everything done on the boat that I can't do while it's in the water.

I'm definitely thinking about documenting the refit work, but probably not the trip. I think a lot of the refit material would be unique/original and of interest to older trawler owners.

I was sold on it after talking to Duane for a couple of minutes. I think it'll be a big improvement over traditional foam. We'll have it on the boat by the end of the week or early next so I'll be able to give you some feedback shortly.

Vancouver Island Circumnavigation - Summer 2018

Well, it's time to get ready for another adventure! Though not quite as big as the last one - you might remember us from the Victoria, BC to the Sea of Cortez thread - there are plenty of projects in the works to get the boat ready for this summer's circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. With...

    AIS receiver for PC

I'm using the ICOM MXA 5000. Had a serial cable made up (wired to the PC out on the back of the unit) and then a serial to USB adapter to connect to my laptop which is running OpenCPN. Keep in mind it outputs NMEA 0183, not 2000. This year I'm installing an NMEA 2000 backbone with new...

'We sold everything to do this and lost it in 20 minutes'

Please don't use the phrase "typical millennials." There are many smart, hard-working young people in this world. Spacex is almost exclusively a company made up of millennials and look at what they did this week. Let alone almost every member of the military, every professional athlete, every...

For Sale: For Sale: Flybridge Seating

I am also thinking of doing something similar. I want to ditch the back-to-back seating on both sides, put in a proper Captain's chair, and then install an L-shaped bench on the port side, maybe a storage locker on the stbd side. Please post more details/photos of your project if possible!

87-year-old Boat Heads to UK (the slow way)

Just found your thread (been following via the blog). It was great chatting with you in the spring and we're glad to see you making excellent progress down the coast! You guys are making it look way easier than it was for us. Goes to show that starting the trip in the middle of August might not...

    Point Wilson rips

I've run north from Port Townsend in a 42' Catalina at max flood in a small craft advisory. When we got to the buoy, we were barely able to motor past it. Waves were 4-5 foot. Wind was 25-30kts out of the SE so it was opposing the current. That was sketchy but it never felt terribly dangerous...

Ford Lehman 120 Cooling System Air Bleed

Another update. I received my Speedseals for the Lehman and my Northern Lights genset. In the process of installing the Speedseal on the Lehman, I pulled the impeller so I could sand off any debris/irregularities on the impeller housing seal face. Backtracking for a second, the last time I...
