    100 year old hull ?

There are many wood boats significantly older than 1917 still in service around the world. The key to longevity, as with any boat but probably more so in wood ones, is constant maintenance and repairs. Read $$$$. Can the wood really last that long? Some of it can and will, but a lot of it gets...

    zodiac reg numbers

Had the same problem. Used acetone or something similar. Followed with careful scraping with a scraper with the corners rounded off and 80 then 100 grit. Don't be too aggressive. On my second set of these as the numbers get rubbed off. Company replaced first set free. Time for third set soon...

    gray water

Our plans are (finally after 2 years of postponements) to do the Erie Canal up and Richlieu and Champlain back down this summer. The thought of having to disconnect that putrid, dripping hose before entering Champlain does not enthuse me. Trying to think of a way of preparing for the...

    Who built a kit boat?

I built a Kingfisher rowing shell from a kit about 30 years ago. Used it for a few years but Penobscot Bay is not a benign body of water on which to row such a craft. Couple that with my incipient geezerhood and the poor shell has now been hanging in the rafters of my barn for the last 20 years...

    Hand Bearing Compass app

So your "cocked hat" may be a bit large using this app. Still, it might be useful, unless you are running close in.

    Where did you grow up?

I like to think that I haven't grown up and my wife, kids and friends tend to agree. However, I spent my early years sailing and putting around on LI Sound and on Penobscot Bay, mostly the latter.

    My bilge pump sucks...

Having had a wooden boat for 23 years, I find the small amount of water left in the bilge pump sump comforting and nostalgic.

Your first time on a boat

I was 8 months old when my parents rented a house on Penobscot Bay (that they later bought). The only access to it at the time was by boat and my parents' friends delivered us to it aboard their 40' +/- schooner. The story goes that the landlady rowed out to meet us in a dory but the skipper...

    Lobstering in Maine 1954

Yeah, them toggles can be a royal pain, especially with the tide going one way, the current another and a windy chop going still another.

    Lobstering in Maine 1954

The boats, the traps and the electronics have changed, but the way of life remains the same. I remember the two people mentioned in this film and represented the Estate of one of them. And E.B. White: his son Joel became a well known Maine yacht designer and builder and his grandson Steve...

    New Boat, New Word

"Greetings, 1) Depoxy (v.) (alt. depoxify, n. depoxification): to remove epoxy, syn. an impossible task often learned the hard way by amateur boat builders. 2) Depoxy (n.) (alt. n. Black Death, n. the pox): Bubonic Plague. eg: "Da squire's done for. He's got depoxy." LOL...
