  1. Capt. Joe

    Wintering IceBound in Ontario CA.

Got it covered - we froze the boat in and that's that, except we agitate if and when staying aboard, as the ice pushes her up out of the water and never on an even keel...
  2. Capt. Joe

    Wintering IceBound in Ontario CA.

We never did (cover up) and spent a decade in climates where winter is winter. To me, that would defeat the purpose of why we were staying onboard while icebound; for the surrounding view.... :)
  3. Capt. Joe

    Wintering IceBound in Ontario CA.

No, not anymore. Did it for 30 years, mostly in warm climate though. First year ashore in winter....
  4. Capt. Joe

    Wintering IceBound in Ontario CA.

Arrived in our winter slip yesterday, where the river flows fast and for the most part doesn't freeze. (We live a stone throw away up river, right at Lock 32 of the Trent Severn Waterway.) ... 2 public cameras are broadcasting from the boat during daylight hours. The forward looking cam should...

    Charles Wittholz

Wonder if there are any Wittholz design owners here? Beebe's Trawler Bible gives him a chapter under "Work Of Other Designers). 30 years aboard ours, no complaints, not even after a couple of hurricanes..... ... Here are some papers I recently found in our storage: (The 39 / 40 is ours built in...

    Raw water/fresh water hose

This may be an OK statement in some cases, BUT underwriters and lenders will expect labeling as "approved for marine" and/or "below waterline" application, so when I do a survey I have to look for that designation. It can be a big mistake to say something designated "marine" is just a money...
  7. Capt. Joe

30 years living aboard full time....

    Affirmative :)
  8. Capt. Joe

30 years living aboard full time....

He has been labelled a "JB Wannabe", of course. The music is "Trop Rock" and was the child of Buffett. In the last 20 years a lot of good artists have evolved with it.
  9. Capt. Joe

30 years living aboard full time....

Here is one of our bigger adventures, in the eye of Hurricane Andrew from 1992. (The boat's hull was white then. We decided to go for gray during the refit in Nassau Bahamas; it allowed us to buy cheaper fuel and dockage where the commercial boats tied up): Surviving Hurricane Andrew ... That's...
  10. Capt. Joe

30 years living aboard full time....

Listened a lot to Eric Stone and met him a few times back in the nineties in Marathon, he used to play at Burdines then, before he bought Dockside.....

    Real winter Liveaboard?

We used agitators, no noise. We also let it freeze in but she never came up on an even keel when the ice pushed her up, so we kept it clear if we knew we were staying onboard. Even in Toronto we got 2 to 3 feet of ice, up here in Bobcaygeon several feet.

30 years living aboard full time....

Wow, small world is it not! :)
  13. Capt. Joe

30 years living aboard full time....

Absolutely. We all are different but I always have been a bit of a gypsy. Rather live on the edge but not too far out.... :)
  14. Capt. Joe

30 years living aboard full time....

Thanks for the kind words re the pics. BUT, in my humble opinion, paradise is where you make it. I get tired of people saying the same as you did. We were there for years down south, 3 hurricanes, one was Andrew in the Berry Islands, lived through it, ate lobster every day, lived on oysters &...
  15. Capt. Joe

30 years living aboard full time....

We did a few years at Bluffers Park, it was great, but not the city up the hill....
  16. Capt. Joe

    Real winter Liveaboard?

Winters IceBound We have an electric furnace, had diesel and it worked well, but for the last few years we have had a wood stove. Loved it. Free firewood all around us, as opposed to paying 5 bucks a gallon for diesel (in Canada)....
  17. Capt. Joe

30 years living aboard full time....

..... but, as of this year, we start living ashore in winters. ... If you asked me, I would not have done it any different. Whether in the Caribbean or icebound on the Great Lakes, life could not be better than aboard a boat. I think we are more healthy because of it. After some fifteen years in...

    Bay of fundy, by car...

Funny I should read this, we plan on going to PEI and NB in 2018 with the boat, but as far as the Bay of Fundy, I told Wendy we'll be seeing it from a land-yacht, LOL....

    Forum advice liability

Thanks for this, I myself wanted to correct him but I didn't trust myself because of the language I wanted to use regarding the crap he wrote about it being "entry level"........

    Forum advice liability

In Ontario Canada we have in excess of some 200 "surveyors" printing cards as such. Less than a dozen of us, about 5% of them, do 99% of the work. I truly believe that we should be regulated and I don't mind voicing my opinion; there is a need for consumer protection in our industry!
  22. Capt. Joe

For Sale: 60 pound (CQR) Kingston

Have been down about 4 times and then it lived in the bilge as a back-up storm anchor. Located in Ontario Canada.

    Layout question

FF said: "Extend your boat search to "motor yachts" from just trawlers as many have the same engine and underwater shape." Absolute truth! Very few "trawlers" built today are actually trawlers. They just have the above waterline shape of trawlers because the consumer likes that design and don't...

    Layout question

utazo89 Forget this "windage" thing and pick up "Voyaging Under Power" by Beebe / Leishman. In it you will learn about things like prismatic coefficient and above-WL VS below-WL ratios. All power boats have "windage" but if you are concerned about it (and it only enters the equation if you...
  25. Capt. Joe

    Layout question

cappy208 brought up a good point re cored hulls - you do not want core below waterline! So, that will not be the case with a Taiwan made older trawler, but their fuel tanks and such structural members as stringers and bulkheads did not stand up well for moisture ingression. Having said that, in...
