    Going green

Yep, there are certainly stability advantages to the monohull (ultimate stability), and loading issues with cats. Even then, I don't thing they have to be enormous to gain efficiency. They can exceed the traditional hull speed ratio developed for monohulls and still obtain the efficiency of...

    Going green

I think a properly designed cat is more efficient than a full displacement monohull.

    Getting started

True, if you read Buehler's book it's clear that the duck's sailing rig is intended solely as an emergency, get-home power source, as well as an occasional assist to the engine.

    Going green

My hat's off to Island Pilot for being an innovator in this area. My wife and I considered them but decided it was just too risky given that they were going directly from the scale model to Hull No. 1 -- no prototype. I can see that in a traditional boat but not in something this unique...

    Isinglass cleaner...

I think the main difference between Lugger and Deere is that Lugger tries to maintain consistency in the engines' ancillary components over the years, while Deere will swap out suppliers on a regular basis.

Seriously.* FF's apparently started his deNile cruise early.*

    Adding chain

Defender lists the load of a 3/8" galvanized connector link at 2750 lbs. -- so it would in fact be the weak link in your chain. Maybe the best solution would be to have the lengths welded? http://www.defender.com/category.jsp?path=-1|10391|32295&id=321087&start=11&results=10&sort=products --...

    Indeed, very interesting history.

    Design, old and new

The Nordies are great boats but good lookin' they ain't. Among the production, trawler-type boats, I think the Flemings are beautiful, the GB Europas are attractive, the smaller Krogens are kind of cute, and most everything else is just utilitarian looking.

    Bay of Campeche

If I'm not mistaken, there was a pretty extensive article about such a trip in PM maybe 5-6 months back.

    Anyone familiar with Mariner Yachts?

thanks for the replies. it's good to hear that the owner is keeping close tabs on the yard. i actually liked the looks of the seville. looks better in person than in the pics, imo. i like the north pacific boats too, but if i recall they have less outdoor space. will check them out again.

    Anyone familiar with Mariner Yachts?

Went to the Miami Boat Show today and came away impressed with the Mariner Yachts 37 Pilothouse as a relativey affordable coastal cruiser.* The admiral and I both liked the layout and the fit and finish seemed decent.* Good mix of indoor/outdoor space for Fla./Bahamas cruising.* It's a "fast...

    Diesel engine hours

I'm newish to trawlers too, but from what I gather diesel hours depend a lot on the specific model and of course on how it's been run and maintained. Generally they are much more durable than the gas engines we're used to. By way of example, a recent discussion about the old Lehman 120...

Could be wrong but I think what these guys are saying is -- not to run at WOT all day, etc. -- but rather, making the general point that a well-used engine is healthier than one underutilized and under loaded.* In this month's PM Steve advised someone to run his engine up to WOT at least 5-10...

Marin, Steve D started as a marine mechanic/electrician in '88 and worked his way up to VP at Zimmerman Marine in VA, where he oversaw the repair yard and new construction of Zimmerman's new boats. He recently left to start his own consulting business. He does a lot of lecturing and clinics...

    Design

Marin, Steve D (whatever you think of him) had a good piece of advice at PMU: have your new props scanned after they are fully tuned. Since your shop is top-rated they should have the capability. That way, if you ever need them repaired or replaced, they can be returned *exactly* to like-new...

I really don't know the answer, nomadwilly, but my guess would be that a twin would have more drag than a single, but not twice as much. I agree that it's a bit baffling to see semi-displacement boats being fitted out with insufficient power to take advantage of the design. OTOH, I've...

    Design

I know that in outboard applications multiple motors are always less efficient in terms of mpg than equivalent horsepower singles, and maintenance costs are closer to double than 120%. Don't forget that you're also doubling the drag from the running gear with two motors. OTOH, getting a clean...

    Electric Boat Engines

As mentioned above, there's also the solar/diesel/electric hybrid being produced by Island Pilot (DSe Hybrid) -- also using the Ossa Powerlite system (2x 25kw generators and 2x 35hp DC motors). Their first hull, a 40' cat, is supposed to be ready for showing this year.

    Hilarious boat ads!

Pretty funny ads. From reading other forums, the boats aren't always so funny, like when screws start backing out, throughhulls leak, etc.

    Electric Boat Engines

The Island Pilot solar/diesel/electric boats are going to be very interesting, and they cost a lot less than the Norhavn.* I'm hoping to see one at the Miami boat show, but I don't know if they're on schedule (planned to be there last year).* It's disappointing that they opted not to build a...

    Your boating history...

Guess I'm the town newbie. :) No boating experience growing up in suburban D.C., except the occasional day on friends' boats. Moved to Miami (from N.O.) seven years ago and decided the water was too pretty and too accessible to miss, so my wife and I joined a boat club. Pretty sweet deal...
