    Thanks RT, that was helpful.

Older and 1st tier or newer but 2nd tier...

So with everything being equal price, # of helms, heads, staterooms engines (# and brand) etc you would not take one manufacturer over another or just flip a coin?

Older and 1st tier or newer but 2nd tier...

I was hoping not to have to mention specific brands. With all due respect if you don't know then you can't answer the question. There's obviously better quality boats then others just like autos. Maybe the question is too sensitive to ask as we all can be quite bias to what we own. If someone...

Older and 1st tier or newer but 2nd tier...

So I think many like me who are deciding what trawler to buy are considering this: Assuming you have a $300k budget and all else is the same as far as number of hours on engine and overall well maintained. Do you opt for an older tier 1 boat or newer tier 2 boat? Trawler would be used for...

Active fin stabilizer retrofit - I have pushed the 'button'

Curious if you considered the Seakeeper Gyro. There are pros and cons, one of which is a less invasive retro.

    Hurricane boundary

The reason I am asking is that I'm still 2 years out in my purchase of a trawler. I live in central NJ and will be selling my home with a significant downsize and using the proceeds to buy a used trawler and modest home preferably with its own bulkhead. I notice some members have a slip in...

    Hurricane boundary

Does anyone know the hurricane boundary on the east coast meaning at what point north would insurance companies consider your slip location outside of the hurricane zone and thus lower premiums. Is there a sliding scale?

    Ratio...

Can someone comment on the above water to below water ratio. That is the height of the boat from the waterline divided by the draft. According to the article a maximum ratio of 2.6 allowable for venturing into rough waters. Any credence to this or is it useful as one variable in buying a boat...

    offshore vs coastal cruising

So, true or false, there is no less danger in cruising between 2 ports that are 200 miles apart (no ports in between) then cruising from 2 land masses 200 miles apart (ie island to island). A coastal rated cruiser should theoretically be able to handle both?

    Starting my journey......

Got it but.... although we intend to cruise by ourselves most of the time we do like to entertain so there will be sleepovers with our 2 sons (and friends) and others. I'm not rich by no means and will only be buying a trawler from the proceeds of selling my home that I could afford a decent...

    Starting my journey......

Part of my journey is convincing the trawler life will be good for me and my wife. My wife needs to be impressed (yikes!). She also has less boating experience than me (mine from fishing and not at the helm). I think I have a better chance of making this work with a larger and newer boat. An...

    Starting my journey......

After reading everyone's comments I have decided not to buy a used "learning boat". I appreciate all the responses but the consensus is to charter with a captain and/or find a trawler school. The economics make perfect sense, why spend 35k to 50k on a smaller boat with the extra cost of...
