    North Carolina Relocation Suggestions

We keep our boat in Washington, NC at the yacht club there. No problems with hurricanes. We have a boat yard next door with a travel lift if we need. We enjoy the pool and golf and currently have a covered slip until we put our hardtop on next year. It's about 60 NM to the coast so that may...

    $675 USCG Documentation?

One of those "brokers" sites got me for $300+ to change my name. Looked pretty official on the page too. It's really easy and you can call the CG if you have questions

    Generator / inverter shock risk

Salt water no worries unless you grab a shaft or something in the boat that's electrified. We are basically a little less conductive than the salt water so It'll go around you on it's way to ground. Fresh water well it's totally different. It's milliamps that can kill here. Some sad stories...

Wow. These slimeballs are good! (Documentation)

Just got nailed myself. Had all the paperwork filled out for a name change just needing the fee schedule.. Well I ended up on their site and ... I paid almost $300.... I was so depressed about it, but fool me once, never twice...

Marine Trader - Shoot through hull transducer

As far as I know fiberglass and water are basically the same for the transducer. Or they are close enough in density that it doesn't affect reading, but I like the wax ring idea to check.

    How close is too close?

Not sure, but had some questionable close passes myself. A friend told me it's better to pass close with a bigger waking boat. It was proved to me by a friends 30 something searay. Was a lot smoother at a close pass. But all boats may be different. I do know I prefer small boats to pass at...

    Insurance Non-Renewal

Yes. 1986 Bayliner 38. Twin diesel. Geico hull value $35k New quote $40k. No claims, bought 2.5 years ago with basically no prior provable experience. Have had and do have a few trailer boats. Was trying to jump to a Hatt 58, but insurance feelers wanted captains and a premium price...

    Insurance Non-Renewal

I am in the process of renewal. Just got a quote from Maritime insurance intl. I believe they are a broker b/c the quote is from New Hampshire Ins co. I have Boat US. They raised my premium 25% before the storms from $1200 to $1600 with zero claims. Probably due to Geico. This is only...

    Perko inc

Sounds good, but after 2 failures of perko's on the boat last year, and one new one that was bad. I'll stay away from their switches.

    Trawler sinks, all survive

I do remember there was some kind of hydraulic swim platform on this when it was for sale. I also think when they say a boat built in "china" that's how I remember it being sold. Not sure what yard or if it was a yard. Boat was more of a dinner boat style, but in trawler form. I think...

    Trawler sinks, all survive

I remember this boat. It was at the National liquidators maybe 4 or 5 years back. Twin cats, stabilized, fiberglass. Neat boat I think at around $100k. I also think it may have been for sale not too long after the NL on yachtworld. I could be wrong about the latter. That was a few...

How was your boating year, 2016?

I give a B-. It's our first year with the big boat. We traveled home from purchase 300+ miles. Then we took 2 cruises 65 miles each way to ocracoke, and one trip about 25 miles for fuel. Also took 2 or 3 trips to Washington, NC which is about 8 miles from the club. I really thought I...

    Boat search for the Loop

We have a 38 bayliner. Is a great boat for the loop and will top out at 17 knots. Has prop pockets so little draft. Boat is well put together and there is plenty of info about them. Seems prices have gone up a tad recently, but can be had for a decent price.

    Bad Fuel Tanks

Holes are cut into the side of the boat all the time to replace tanks and engines. If done right there is no issues. There are many pics from boat yards even doing this to 100'+ yachts. It's the only way for some. There is also a video of it being done to the bottom of the hull on a grand...

    Anchor Circles

Doubt that it's even perceivable at that close of a distance. If you let out plenty of chain say 1 nm it might change a bit, but not for the distances we use.

    Hatteras 53 Construction Confusion

I used to frequent the hatteras forum. And I'm sure it's only the decks. The hulls are solid glass. Quite thick I might add. Not sure about the topside walls, but the hulls are solid!

    MI>NC Learning the Coast

We are planning on doing the dismal at the end of June then coming down through coinjock. We traveled from Baltimore last year and didn't have time to do the dismal. We too are in NC. Live north of Raleigh in Castalia, and keep our boat under a shed at Washington yacht club. Nice to have a...

I am impressed with this product

We used Red Max on our motorhome, lasts about 3 years. I feel it is so much easier than waxing yearly. Gives a good shine and it comes off easy with the floor stripper. Have to be careful on painted surfaces b/c you can pull paint off with it. I am considering doing the boat with it myself...

    Drifting........Navy style

Top speed of the Enterprise was 33.8 knots. Limited by shaft torque. I stood Throttleman watch many a night shift in the mid 90's. The 60 mph was a myth. I was able to remove the brass plate on the throttles to polish and found where the whole watch team in the 80's had signed when she ran...
