    Looking at Trawlers

So, we have been looking at a lot of boats lately and came upon a late 70's Litton Europa trawler w/twin Lehman 120's. Any opinions or knowledge of these models would be greatly appreciated :) We like the boat but don't know of the "original" quality of them. Thanks for the help as always.

    Is the ocean really dead?

Wow, Just finished reading all 54 "parts" to the Dead Ocean question and I must say, it is very interesting. Having sailed around the oceans, except Europe, I can say that I have indeed seen many "patches" of plastic floating around the Pacific and Atlantic oceans but have never seen anything...

    Engines

I to have been looking at quite a few boats lately and I have come to the conclusion that it is a 5.9 cummins or nothing for me. I work in the automotive industry and although they are not identical, there is a reason a Dodge Ram Cummins truck with the 5.9 is worth the same or more than they...

    For Sale: Ultimate Trawler?

Well, I love that boat and if I were a 1% kinda guy, I would restore it just because it would be an awesome toy to have, and make sure I had a full time crew on her just to keep her looking great. Brings me back to my school days of polished brass :-) On a serious note, does anybody know why...

    Best quality/workmanship build trawler

Mr.Pierce, I love your boat and meant no disrespect towards you engine room or any other. As you know, I went to CMA and was comparing engine rooms to ones like the "Cub" we had at school and thought I was looking for a boat with that style stand up engine compartment. The more I look though...

    Best quality/workmanship build trawler

Well Mr. Pierce  My intention for the boat is to use it around the SF Bay and to go to the Farallon islands and to Bodega and Monterey bay. I really like the "heavy" Defever's but I am afraid the better half (wife) will like the Californian and 4788 better. So, as an ex Marine Engineer...

    Best quality/workmanship build trawler

So, what is the opinion on the Bayliner 4788 anyway? We looked a a Defever 48 today and are going to look at a 48 Californian tomorrow. There is a 4788 in the marina where the other boats are and it looks great, but, on a weight basis, the 1979 Defever came in at about 40,000 lbs, were as the...

    RV's to Boats

Wow, so sad to see my old TSGB sitting there with one little piece left. That would be cool to have that in our back yard :-) did they just scrap her, would have loved to go get some of that divisional art and other things off her before they cut her up! Where is that scrap yard/bow? That room...

    Best quality/workmanship build trawler

I too am looking for a trawler/aft cabin style boat. 45-50ft. What is the opinions on the mid 80's Californians and Defever's Also, never thought of a Bayliner but the 4788 seemed to have a slight following. A little bigger than a 40 but I'm sure these makes have versions in the 40 range. Thank you

    RV's to Boats

I believe the Deck guys got to "practice" with the "cub". Us snipes never really got to play her. I always wanted to use her for fishing but guess how that went over with the faculty! Yea, that new paint looks great, much better. I never sailed on this one except for a "day on the Bay" cruise...

    RV's to Boats

Deckofficer, just assumed you were before me, as you are a little older than me :-) so did you get the honor of sailing on the old Steam Golden Bear or the new cozy diesel one? Don't remember when the retired the old girl On the 10% thing, I think it is a good "guess" which gives everybody some...

    RV's to Boats

Yes, Dr. Wheeler was there, he was actually my favorite there. Maybe because he was my 1st teacher I had there. My freshman year, I believe I was in his class both long trimesters. Not during the cruise winter one though. I talked to him a few years ago at Homecoming and he seemed to be doing...

    Rebuild or Turnkey?

Thanks for the great topic. We are currently in the beginning stages of searching for a 48-52 trawler/cruiser and re-power was a question I asked in another topic "RV's to Boats". I saw a 48 Defever w/twin Harvester diesels that is substantially cheaper (30k ish) than most others I have seen...

    It’s Showtime

Yes Deckofficer, Graduated in 92 from the engineering side. Started as Deck (3D) and transferred to (3E) after 1st year. Didn't want to sail forever and figured the Engineering side had better shore side opportunities. Sailed for 6 years, mostly from Philly to Buenos Aries and back for Crowley...

    It’s Showtime

Been following this adventure since I joined the TF in late July and read every post. What excitement-better than Moby Dick. I used to sail the Seas on Tankers and Container ships in the 90's and I must say, you two are an inspiration! I don't think I could do such a trip on such a small boat...

    RV's to Boats

So, Been looking at a lot of boats and I have another question :-) I am seeing a lot of boats at varying prices for pretty much the same boat. (I know they are never the same, as owner maint is a huge part of the quality of the boat, at least ones built in the 80's which we are looking at) but I...

    RV's to Boats

Thanks for the help as always. That Survey 101 was really involved but helpful to know what there is to look at. Been looking at all kinds of boats and have found 3 "styles" or models that we like and would like to get a few opinions on the differences. Defever 48-50', Californian 52', and Sea...

    RV's to Boats

Wow, A lot of info in only 1 day. Thanks for all the help! It seems that the 10% is a reasonable "guess" as I know nobody can tell you to the penny how much it will cost. Sunchaser, you make a great point. I guess it really does matter how much you really want to put into your boat. BTW, A...

    RV's to Boats

Well, After about 10 years worth of cruising the asphalt, we are thinking of moving on to the water. I am an Ex-Marine engineer from Cal Maritime and have loved the ocean since the day my dad moved to Seattle in 1980 and have decided to "look into" buying a boat to replace the RV, and keep it in...
