    New Leds

Oliver... I replace a bilge bulb with an LED, and the prongs were "skinnier" than the original bulb's prongs - my concern is vibrating out or intermittent contact.. did your LED's prongs fit as tight as the bulbs they replaced? Thanks,

Florida to the VI and Points South

Here's another consideration. How often would you use a VI capable boat for a VI kind of trip? A lesser ($) boat might suffice for miles of ICW cruising and near coastal tropical waters like the Keys and Bimini whereas a VI capable boat might end up being under-used. I went to Lucaya, Bahamas...

    Permitted/NonPermitted Posts

Roger Keith... did that - just wasn't sure about posts on TF for commercial businesses... I assumed correctly that it was OK if not for personal gain... I posted positive comments on TF about 2 marinas and received several thank you replies... Thanks for your response,

What mechanical diesel engine failure has occurred while underway?

Thanks psneeld... I'll look into switching the battery... for the time being, I've been turning off the rotary DC main switch, but that switch needs to stay on when we're overnighting on the boat... the separate batt switch is the better fix... thanks...

What mechanical diesel engine failure has occurred while underway?

One of the things learned at the dock and not off shore somewhere... How did you correct this in your boat?

2 very nice Marinas on Fla Atlantic ICW

We just returned from a cruise to Deerfield Beach, FL. We needed 2 overnight marina stays going and returning. We stayed at Melbourne Harbor Marina 2 nights. Dock Master Capt Phil guided us in on VHF and was ready to handle lines as we docked. Our power cable didn't reach the power pedestal so...

What mechanical diesel engine failure has occurred while underway?

Enigne Room fire Wasn't underway; happened at my dock. About 9pm, I heard the 370HP Yanmar engine running; had not been on the boat that day. Boarded boat, engine didn't answer helm commands. Opened hatch smelled burning insulation. Fortunately the Yanmar tech has shown me how to shut down...

    Permitted/NonPermitted Posts

Under FAQ and General Usage, I didn't find any guidance on what's allowed and what's not allowed to post. On a recent trip to South Florida we stayed at 2 different marinas that I would highly recommend but it may not be acceptable on TF to post a favorable or a non favorable comment about a...

New to Trawlers - Just Retired

Roger Brad... for Vicky and me making short trips (Coastal Fla so far) the smaller stove/ref works for us - augmented by a cooler. We don't plan to live aboard, but a trip to NC and the Small Loop (cross canal to west coast, Key West and back to NSB) would be the extent of our cruising - and...

New to Trawlers - Just Retired

Agree completely Brad... and I've never used my lower helm, but I see lots of trawlers going by here in nasty weather being piloted from inside... no "raincoated" tough guys on the upper helm... agree also, the joinery isn't Trumpy or Hatteras quality, but I can live with what I have in my...

New to Trawlers - Just Retired

I sure like my 34 Mainship trawler (with upper helm)... has 370 Yanmar and factory mid-ship cleats... handy... extra line to forward tide slides... We just returned from a trip (New Smyrna to Deerfield Beach - 420 mi round trip) and it was a breeze. My opinion, be sure you get a boat with...

    What have you done?

On my 2005 Mainship trawler, I noted that the bow cleats did not have backing plates under the deck cleats. There are threaded Phillips head bolts screwed into the deck through the cleats and I assumed there's something metal imbedded in the deck to bolt to, but that seemed weak. There wasn't...

New to Trawlers - Just Retired

John and Lois.... I'm biased toward Mainship... I have a 2005 34 Mainship trawler that met most of my criteria. Purchased Aug 12. I looked for over a year - boat shows, web sites, trial rides, owners, etc and the MS always came out on top. Mine has the single 370 Yanmar, bow thruster, 8kw...

Living aboard a French canal boat

Sounds like a great trip... Vicky and I toured the Canal du Midi several years ago and enjoyed every minute... very friendly encounters among the natives offering wine and other regional treats. We asked about menu items at one canal restaurant, and the waiter made sounds like a chicken, cow...

    Trailables or not

You might look into having a CDL company tow your boat... similar thing happens each year with Harleys... trucks with trailers bring Harleys to Daytona - owners drive or fly in then trucks return them after Bike Week... would depend on how often and how far you wanted to move your boat...

    2004 Mainship 390 vs 2005 Mainship 34T

what the heck... 1 of each... "entry level" is good analogy, but from a 34T owner, getting into a 34T wasn't like getting into a GB or a Nordhavn... I still have $ for fuel... good luck with your search... I looked for over a year, and MS kept meeting criteria... et
