    Coolant Question

Interesting, I don't know why I did not think to look for a coolant specificaly for diesels.

    Coolant Question

Larry, I thought using distilled water was a no brainer, but as I did it I noticed the jug of mix was warm. At first I just though no that is my imagination, but after a couple of jugs I stopped and felt the next water jug and the antifreeze jug. Both were cool. I mixed the two togather and it...

    Coolant Question

I have an FL 120. I just changed all coolant hoses, t-stat, water pump, and the two steel cooling pipes on the starboard side of the motor. As I was refilling the motor I was mixing 1/2 distilled water and 1/2 Napa brand green antifreeze. I would pour the antifreeze into a jug half full of...

    What type transmission fluid?

Here is a copy of the manual. It says you can use Dextron III, Ford Mercon, Daimler-Benz 236.6, or any SAE 10 Hydralic oil that meets Alison C3 specifications. We use Dextron III. I would not mix anything. If you are unsure what is in it, I would drain it andrefill so you know what you have...

    Portable Generators

I agree with cmgreeniv. We have 480 watts of solar on a 36' boat and almost never run the genny to recharge batteries and we live aboard full time on a mooring. You said your boat was 70' long and a keeper. I think you could find a place to put some solar panels and forget the noise maker.

    Acco chain

Larry, That is a very good point about the 2 year warrenty. I will always be somewhere within reach of a West Marine and I am not bashful about using their warrenty. That to me is the redeeming thing about WM, they stand behind what they sell. If after a year and 11 months I see rust, back it...

    Acco chain

It is interesting to compare the pics of the chinese chain and the Peerless chain. The chinese rod that the links are made of look of horrible quality compared to the Peerless but the galvanizing looks thicker than the Peerless. Maybe we need to make the chain here and send it over there to be...

    Acco chain

Those pics impress me, but not in a good way. These are some pics of the WM grade 43. I got a little piece to make sure it fit the windlass. I am not impressed by it either. The galvanizing looks thin. Maybe I am just hard to please.

    Acco chain

I have looked around, but shipping is the problem. Buying 200' the shipping can easily add $1.50 or more per foot. I have a West Marine 2 blocks away with free shipping. Although the price per foot is more when you look at the total cost not so bad. They do not say they carry Acco G4. It is...

    Portable Generators

Bohans, One piece of info that would be handy is to know how much you anchor out. Do you anchor 3 days a month, one week a month, or most of the time? Also long range plans for the boat such as keeping her for life or plan on trading in a year or two. I don't think good advise can be given...

    Acco chain

Getting ready to buy 200' of 5/16 chain. In my reseach I have come accross quite a few people who swear Acco is the best, but I have also come accross a lot of people that purchased Acco chain that complain of it rusting very quickly as in just a few months. Most of these seem to have been from...

    Portable Generators

We use a Honda 2000 and have a 40amp battery charger that works just fine with the Honda with lots of power to spare. If I use the battery charger I switch the fridge over to 120 as well since the genny is running anyway. Obviously there are some limitations of what combination of things you can...

    Insurance

Geico insures liveaboards and will include the Bahamas if the boat is a twin screw. We have Geico, but when we go to the Bahamas we will have to make other arrangements since we are a single.

    New....HELP!

Just a little free advice that I feel qualified to give having owned a Marine Trader 36 for 3 1/2 years now. When we bought the boat it had 14 water leaks. It did not take to long to track them down and fix them (some easier than others). I replaced all plumbing and all 120 volt wiring and am...

    Fuel tank dilemma, help please

I think that might depend where you are. I have never seen that in any marina rules I have read and it is done everyday. California or northeast coast have a lot more regulations than the rest of the country. I bet 9 out of 10 boats in this harbor have fuel cans sitting on deck and most all of...

    Generator Stratagy

We thought of doing that but like the idea of limited gas useage. The 8 hour run time is fine for us. If it was too cool in the morning it would be hard to open up the boat. I think if I could get my wife to sleep in the V berth we could do without the AC since we only use it to get to sleep...

    Generator Stratagy

Our useage varies too much for a monthly amount. In the summer we use it at night for AC. We fill it up and turn on the AC at bed time and let it run till it runs out of gas about 4 am. The boat is cool enough till we get up and open it up for the day. That uses 1.1 gallons per night. Other than...

    So...Where do you dock?...>>

We are with you Dave. It is the middle of summer and my wife would not trade the mooring ball for a marina if they paid us $18.50 a foot to stay there (the price of a cheap marina here). Different strokes for different folks.

    Generator Stratagy

I will start off by saying I know this is not for everyone, but it seems to work well for us. We live aboard on a mooring and get most of our power from 480 watts of solar panels connected to 8 Trojan T-105 batteries. We use our generator mostly for heating water and AC in the summer. We use a...

Finally got my Sarca on the bow

I ordered a new Super Sarca back in February and it arrived the day after I had to leave to work in LA. I was gone for a little over four months. I finally made it back yesterday. I changed it out today. It fits pretty good on the roller. I cannot wait to try it out. I thought about going out...

Extractor tube broke off in oil pan!

I can see where some engine manufacturers would be thoughtful enough to design this feature in but I would not assume it to be so. We have an FL120 and although I am not at the boat right now to check it, a quick check of the manual shows that the tube stops at the oil pan. If you hooked a...
