Leaving the Keys, Headed for Houston

Thanks, are there better options close to that area? We want to stay close to the Clear Lake area. PS I just sent you an email with the watermaker spreadsheet.

Look forward to it. Are there nice places to anchor around the area?

Leaving the Keys, Headed for Houston

Thanks Off Duty, we will definitely be stopping in Dunedin, it was our second favorite stop on the way down to the Keys. Surpassed only by Ocean Springs MS. It took us about 8 months to get to the Keys from Indiana because we liked to stop at as many places as we could. The trip to TX will be...

Yep, I love the trawler turtle life. You carry your home around on your back and move around at 6 knots.

Leaving the Keys, Headed for Houston

Don't get me wrong, I love the Keys and will be back, but we are ready for something different. Probably the first time it gets below 50 we will be asking ourselves "what were we thinking".

Don't know yet. We would prefer a mooring or anchoring out but have not found any info on any sort of mooring field. We are looking at Blue Dolphin in Seabrook. They advertise a 45' slip for $250 a month. That is less than a mooring ball in Boot Key Harbor. Looking for any local knowledge.

Leaving the Keys, Headed for Houston

Yes, I know it is not as picturesque as the Keys. I have lived in San Antonio and McAllen for 3 years, but we have family and friends in Houston. We are ready to get out of a tourist environment for awhile (yes I know I was a tourist once). but I am tired of $5 bottles of beer and $12...

Leaving the Keys, Headed for Houston

After hanging around the Keys for almost four years now it is time for a break. We will leave Wednesday or Thursday. We plan on stopping in a few places like Dunedin, Destin, Ocean Springs MS, and probably a few others.

    Solar Panel Mounting Locations?

I am kind of partial to our set up, but must admit I am biased. I like things to do at least two if not three things on a boat. Dingy davits, kayak holder, and solar panel supports.

    Honda 2000 Enclosure

FlyWright, I am trying to download a video from my phone that shows the difference. Hopefully soon. SiestaKey and mbevins, I guess it is too soon to see if it affects the cooling but I don't think it will. Honda makes an enclosure for the 2000 and it is smaller and more constricted than mine...

    Honda 2000 Enclosure

We use a Honda 2000 for supplemental power. We have always had it set on the rear deck and covered with a tarp. This did not really give adequate protection so I had been planning to build an enclosure for it for some time, but just got around to it last week. The Honda has always been quiet...

    What's in a name?

Our boat was originally a charter boat in St. Thomas and named Island Queen. She had that name from new (1978) until last year. It took me a couple of years to bring myself to change the name as I am a bit sentimental, but we changed it to "Walkabout". A term we learned during the four years we...

    Got a problem

Thanks BruceK for the tip on Ronstan. We have a winner. Ronstan RF637 exceeds the ratings of G4 chain, has a jaw wide enough to fit my Sarca anchor and the pin is 3/8" so it fits easily through the 5/16" chain. I can now attach the anchor with only one shackle which is what I wanted to do. The...

    Got a problem

Well Peter hopefully you are not serious. Buying a shackle of the same strength as the chain that it connects is not anal it is good engineering. If good engineering is anal then I confess my goal is to be anal. LOL Quote from HH "I have to go with Pete on this one. In my younger days, I had a...

    Got a problem

Thanks Larry but their 3/8 shackle has a 7/16 pin and will not fit through the 5/16 chain.

    Got a problem

3/8" is the largest pin that will fit through a 5/16 chain and that is what I bought.

    Got a problem

I just purchased 200' of 5/16 G4 chain from West Marine. I bought a Wichard shackle to connect it to the anchor (pic below). The back of the pack says "Functional Limit 1520 KG/3344 LBS" and "Rupture Load 4300 KG/9460 LBS". The chain is rated at 3900 lbs Working Load Limit and 11,600 lbs...

Is it possible or have I got things wrong

Something does not seem right. 1000 - 1400 rpms to get 6/7.5 knots? Must have been a good current. 1000 is just above idle. We have an FL 120. The manual says to operate between 1250 and 2500 rpms. We usually run at 1450 which is the peak of the torque curve. I have been told that is the most...

    Anchor Wash-down

I just bought the parts this week to put in a fresh water wash down at the bow to rinse the chain off as it comes up. Our chain locker drains into the bilge and really no easy way to change that. The problem we have is that the bilge is normally dry until we pull the anchor then the salt water...

    Chartplotter Decision

We have used a Garmin 441 for the last 6 years. I brought it from our sailbolat when I sold it. It has been flawless, but I am ready for something bigger so I am moving it to the lower helm and buying a Garmin 840xs for the flybridge. Seems to be a nice plotter, I guess time will tell.

    I FOUND MY LEAK!.....now what???

As psneeld said a lot of TTs had hollow keels that over time fill with water. On our last haul out I found this to be the case with ours. The problem is that over the years the water in the keel causes blisters from the inside out. I drilled two inch holes every 4' in the plate that covers the...

    Coolant Question

I had a half gallon of antifreeze left so I measured the temp of it and of the jug of distilled water then mixed them togather. Antifreeze 85.6° It was stored in the ER. Distilled Water 82.4° It was stored in a cabinet. Mixed togather 94.2° So it was not just my imagination. It did begin to...
