Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

Sorry bandB: I meant to say: get happy first then you won't need much to stay that way; rather than getting rich first thinking it will make you happy which it won't .:) Putting the cart before the horse is a mistake that's easy to make.

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

From my personal experience of people from all walks of life I would say this: Just Like respect you can't buy happiness, but you can earn it. If you're already happy, then you don't need much. Rich people become isolated, lonely and sad; everything revolves around money. The flip side of Zen...

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

Getting out on the water is a very Zen experience, the size of your boat has little to do with it. Humans have some sort of instinctive connection to water, it's hard to explain. I've never sold a boat, and still have our original 13' dell quay dory from the late 1960's (I think?), several home...

    REFRIGERATION plan B

That's a very interesting product; never knew there was a kerosene fridge. I have a multi fuel fridge: 12v/230vac/ propane, but I hate having propane onboard and don't like leaving it running at night time. Does it keep things cold well?

Aircon: Frigomar inverter 2amp start up.

I believe the smaller 8k btu unit is about £1k, but by the time you add in all the bits and pieces it starts to get expensive. The only advantages I can see are the small start amps, and the facility of the unit to auto switch to low power when you turn on another appliance on the boat. Silent...

Aircon: Frigomar inverter 2amp start up.

These look like a very interesting hi tech solution to traditional ac units. Would easily run on Honda suitcase genny? 45% saving on electricity use because of dc brushless motors/continuously variable with no thermostat. 2 amps low amps start up load. Marine Air Conditioning Systems

    New Seakeeper gyro

These hi output alternators would run the gyros: Alternators: Mastervolt Alternator 24/150 Incl 3-Stage Charge Regulator (M48524150) 100amps output at 1000 engine revs! 150 amps at 1900 revs.

    New Seakeeper gyro

There's a guy on the mbm forum who retro fitted the bigger Seakeeper 9 to his boat, and with all the extra costs of the fit out etc etc it ended up being twice the original price of the gyro unit. I think each different application needs a special frame and pick up points.

    New Seakeeper gyro

Hi Richard, Hope all's going well for you in Waterford. Did you get the info about the low bridge on the Shannon; it's a good time to start cruising now the spring weather Has arrived. I was just thinking that the torque para vanes exert on the hull doesn't seem to stress it too much, would a...

    New Seakeeper gyro

That's about the weight of 4 people; impressive! A little Honda suitcase could probably run it at 2kw max draw. Good pricing too at under 30k...... The big advantage I see is no fins to get damaged in shallow canals or in harbours, plus no drag at higher speeds.

    New Long Thin, Hyper-Efficient Trawler

I think the compromise of a tri is the huge design strength built into the ama's to deal with the enormous forces exerted on them when they become buried and submerged in a big wave stopping the boat dead in the water. On a Cat with two hulls this makes sense as the buoyancy in the hulls stops...

    Interesting boats

Re. The Russian threat from Putin, I saw on the news last night that the Royal Navy now only has 19 frigates and destroyers, 91 back in 1982 at the time of the Argentinian invasion of the Falklands Islands; 200 tanks of which a large amount not operable, 800 back in the 1980's; and 8 fighter...

+1 I was considering putting alloy tracks on my cat; I'm going to go with plastic now. Thanks for all the info on this thread.

    Convert trawler to motorsailer?

I gave his boat a speed of 4.5 kts upwind, tacking through 90 deg, that makes about 3kts VMG to destination waypoint. Very generous in the circumstances, but maybe deeply flawed logic....

For your viewing pleasure, the lock at Falkirk, The falkirk wheel

Spectacular piece of engineering. You can look at the series called 'great canal journey's with timothy and Pru' on YouTube from channel 4 TV, which shows the trip along this canal and lots of other beautiful English canals as well; worth a look! :)

    Advice on toilet selection

What ever you do don't buy a RM69 electric loo; they are total Cr*p! (Maybe the hint is In the name?) this blocked more times than I wish to remember, total nightmare. http://www.rm69.nl/marine-toilet-electric/ That's why I bought the manual jabsco; in all fairness the original...

    Advice on toilet selection

There's a rich guy on the MBm forum and he's gone through 8 Tecma's on his last 4 new boats all in the 80' range, and he's never any problems with them but they are expensive. Said he'll spec them for his next new boat.........:D (I like to console myself that you can't buy happiness, or a...

    32'/34' trawlers that do 15kts?

Just to add another 32' boat into the mix, the Island gypsy 32' 'gourmet cruiser' Isn't very economical at slow speed. Quote: Originally Posted by Rustybarge what sort of speed do they do on 2 gals/hr? Originally Posted by Codger2 I think the Island Gypsies & their cousins (Gourmet...

    Convert trawler to motorsailer?

I'm not a saily boat person, but I did sail a few dinghy's when I was young. Even hi-tech sail boats can only make progress upwind towards their destination point (VMG) at about 4kts in perfect conditions. Let's be positive and pencil in 3kts for your boat; or about 600revs idle on your engine...

    SeaHorse II is Gone

Thanks very much, that puts some numbers on their economy. I did read comments on the forum that the hull was very good in difficult conditions, and used a quite bit a fuel at slow speeds; I think that's the price you have to pay for seaworthy design. Compromises, compromises!

    SeaHorse II is Gone

I would be grateful if you give me your overall impressions of the Gourmet cruiser? The reason I ask is I'm interested in either MS 34 and IG gorm, and there several for sale here in Europe. what sort of speed do they do on 2 gals/hr? Thanks in advance.

Mainship 34 Mk 1-3 Vs. 34T useful load.

I've heard of this before; it's a way of measuring how much a commercial freight ship can carry at the different plimsole lines, and of course allows the customs impose tariffs on ships in an equitable way. I believe there was yet another system used on the Thames in London at the turn of the...

Mainship 34 Mk 1-3 Vs. 34T useful load.

Ah ok, that makes sense. I think the later 2005 34' t has a totally different hull shape, but it needs 370 hp to max out at 17kts according to several owners on the forum. Maybe a deeper vee needs more power?
