The designer is Irish, hence the Shannon name.: Here's a look at the hull form in the roll over test

    Which hull material ?

We also thinking steel but for example just if the hull will be made in steel rather than aluminium it means 9 tonnes heavier. more cost in paint (but I agree with you ,with perfect initial sand blasting and paint job, it could be good for decades) In alloy around 33T full displacement In...

    Which hull material ?

Nice boat! Normally speaking the lightest building material that's affordable is plywood, then alloy and of course steel. This looks like a displ. Hull, so weight doesn't make much difference to the performance. Rather than alloy (more than twice as expensive), and GRP for a one off (even more...

    Taking the Plunge

Aha, a 'deep fryer' who doesn't believe in colestral.! :D IMO a misplaced superstitious belief contrary to scientific fact. :whistling: ....not at all like Christianity .......

    How Much Bleach- Water Quality

I think the issues may be overblown in this article about bleach causing lung infections, but may be worth considering if you have children onboard. How cleaning with bleach can make children ill | Daily Mail Online

"get home" system powered from generator

I'm sure you have petrol (gasoline) on board for the dingy, so why not put a larger OB on the dingy and use it as a standby motor; people have been doing this for years on smaller boats used for fishing/recreation. How would the engine mount on your transom and be able to tilt up? Bolt a...

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

Hey folks, there seems to be some very strong feelings on 'boat' sides of this argument. :flowers: One things sure, however much money you've made you can't buy back a wasted life. Me, start a firefight? Anyhow, I once had these friends who were socialists (I'm a rightwing...

    Interesting boats

I had a Morgan 4/4 which had a very similar layout to this car, weighed less than a ton at only about 750 kg. ....so if that was a s/d hull we would only need about 50hp/ton to go 15kts. Best bet would be to hang a 60 hp high trust Yam outboard on the back which only weighs 110 kg , same as...

    M/V Pelican

that makes sense, They would have to use the winch to control a big boat like that. It's also common to see a bollard with a cross rod on the top being used Like a cleat: they wind the rope around it at the top which creates at lot of leverage on the bollard, and it is very easy for the rope to...

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

Of course I'm speaking of my own personal experience in my own life, and you from yours. In my life I have know kings, Princes and and the mega rich; spiritually speaking of course, and none of them were materialistic people. Is it possible to be rich and not be negatively affected by it?

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

I'm nearly 60 retired on a pension with an old boat. So for me it's not how much money can I make to buy a superyacht, a jet or a Ferrari..... My question is very Zen: how can I simplify my life even more, how can I get by on less, what are the minimum essentials of life that I really need. I...

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

Is boating for the rich...... In my definition 'rich' means you can pretty well buy anything you want without considering the price. superyachts Jets Estates/Penthouse apartments all over the world Staff To run that lot You would probably need an income of tens of millions. So at a return of...

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

Look how many famous people ending up destroying their own lives, esp in the entertainment business. Ok so they're know for the excesses they indulge in. Take Bill Gates: when goes to get a Big Mac there is one car in front with 4 armed security guys, and another car behind. He's become a...

IRELAND TO THE MEDITERRANEAN, Part 1

Wow, please post some pics of your refit; sounds very interesting!:) The Broom line of models is very confusing, and a lot of info on the broom owners site is wrong; they list twin seagoing boats as Displ. Ect etc.... Here's your boat:Broom Owners Club - 42 Shannon Class Is it semi-d or just...

    M/V Pelican

I'm still amazed how there's always something new to learn about boating.... I never knew that the big twin bollards on tugs and big barges were used to reduce the shock on the ropes before being led into the deck cleat. Here in Ireland and on the Thames in London they twist the ropes around...

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

What is our true nature? The dilemma is that when a poor person becomes rich they change; waiters fawn on them, shop assistants coo, bank mangers bow ....and in a very short time the ordinary 'nice guy' turns into a VIP monster demanding this that and the other. Wealth destroys the rich guys...

IRELAND TO THE MEDITERRANEAN, Part 1

Hi IR, Good luck on your adventure, sounds like fantastic fun. Those brooms have a reputation as good sea boats, although you only ever come across them on rivers. Built like tanks, and keep their value for decades. Which engine do you have, and what cruise speed will that give you to cross...

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

Looking at these scenarios: A)I'm wealthy, I'm a member of an expensive country club, all my friends are wealthy too. B)I'm poor, I live in a trailer park, all my friends are ordinary people. Role play : The wealthy guy loses all his money. The poor guy makes a fortune. The result: A)All My...

No. I'm saying that the rich and famous are unhappy because they are wealthy, not because they became wealthy.

But... if you are already happy and content then it's unlikely that you would have a superyacht and private jet... Because... A super yacht and jet ain't necessary to be happy. :D

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

I'm not suggesting becoming an ascetic and starving yourself. But happiness is in a different compartment to wealth, and becoming happy is a different job of work to becoming rich. They are two separate unconnected issues. Could you be rich and happy? Rather....when you are already happy you...

Is boating for the rich? Feeling dismayed

Whoops.....! Referring back to 'is boating for the rich.......... To précis what I said: no, the smaller the boat the more the fun, the rich and famous are miserable people; isolated, sad, lonely......! :D In other words: be happy, get a small boat that makes you content.
