Is there a write up about how exactly a GB should be bonded. I think my GB has a similar, though not quite as severe a problem. @Marinex or someone -could you explain the science behind this? thx

    Alternator Overcharging

So I swapped out the 24V alternator for a 12V and guess what? Three years worth of odd electrical problems seem to have vanished. I can't believe it. The whole things makes me feel sick. On the bright side I have a much better understanding of my electric systems and replaced a few bad...

    Alternator Overcharging

Thanks for your help all I think my original problem is that until today in fact I had no idea that my previous alternator was 12Volts. I replaced it a few years ago and I guess at the time I trusted the alternator shop to match up my old alt correctly with a new one. I was not paying...

@DaveM - No disrespect but I would guess by your answer that your not in the teaching profession.

    Alternator Overcharging

So I have a problem I have been attempting to chase down. With the engine running I read the volts at my starter battery at an initial 16 volts and that climbs to 18+ volts before I shut the engine down. My Alternator is a 24Volt Prestolite Leece-Neville One Wire Alternator. All of my...

Using a Makita 3-3/8" saw to re-groove teak seams?

Nice work on the hatches. It seems like there are a number of good ways to approach teak deck grooves. If anyone knows of a good way to approach the plugs Id like to hear about it. That is one of my next projects.

Wood Boat - Insurance and Pending dilemna

Just a quick update. We decided to keep the boat. My children and I are in the process of redoing the interior woodwork and paint as well as some of the brightwork. I'll post some pictures when we are finished by way of rounding out this discussion. Thanks for all the input so far.

For Sale: SOLD: Any One interested in a 120 HP Ford Leman

For anyone needing an engine I can vouch for this one. I had the chance to examine it running a bit before it was removed from the boat. It was meticulously maintained as to the mechanics and ran perfectly. The price is certainly right so if the timing were right for me I would have...

    Transformation Continues

Did you use Teak Guard on the interior of Ebbtide as well as exterior? I've placed my order and am waiting for it to arrive so I can do the brightwork.

    The story of Grand Banks

This caught my eye in the article regarding the Grand Banks 32. "It takes only $38 to fill her tanks". Wish that were still the case.

Using a Makita 3-3/8" saw to re-groove teak seams?

We did make several passes depending upon how deep we needed to go. It worked perfectly. One thing is I did not use the blade in the picture. That might work well also especially for removing the caulk. For removing the caulk we mostly used a reefing tool and did not encounter much of...

Using a Makita 3-3/8" saw to re-groove teak seams?

It looks like there are a number of good ways to do this. I was too scared to go the makita saw route method fearing that one false move and I would destroy my deck. The Fein tool looks fine but a bit expensive an electric. I went with one of these Veritas® Router Plane - Lee Valley...

    Original finish on cabin cabinet

I am interested in the finish as well. Mine currently has a nice mellow satin, almost natural teak, finish. Not sure what was used but It looks nice. Wondering if it is the original?

    Grand Banks 32 Sedan

I think part of the issue of getting around the Grand Banks 32 'engine room' is where all the peripherals (battery boxes, water heater etc) are located. If these things are not in the way or if they can be moved such that they are not in the way I think you'll find you have fairly good access...

For Sale: Sold-Ebbtide is for sale

What!!!!!! Um I could send you pictures of fiberglass horror stories. I think you were probably not hearing stories but cliches passed on from one unknowledgeable person to another. Wood boats are great and easy to maintain as compared to fiberglass. I think what people mean if and...

Wood Boat - Insurance and Pending dilemna

That question about fasteners is my biggest concern and is part of the problem. I don't know their age. and don't know if or when it has ever been refastened. A year and a half ago we extracted a number and all were in fine condition. Did we get lucky? I don't know. I did post some...

Wood Boat - Insurance and Pending dilemna

The answer is pretty much yes to all the above. If I could find a nice GB 36 Sedan I might be tempted but I really don't like the alternatives in my price range. I don't like the looks or style of the GB 36 classic as it really has no seating area in the stern. Due to my uncertainty about...

Wood Boat - Insurance and Pending dilemna

So even though the insurance company put a $3k salvage value on the boat they are giving me a first right of refusal and letting me bid a lower amount . So the question is - what is the value of a mortorless 1972 Grand Banks 32? Lets assume here that the hull, prop, propshaft, rudder and...

Wood Boat - Insurance and Pending dilemna

So the insurance company just got back to me with the salvage value "The salvage value would be $3,000.00" Darn. What a conundrum. Should I keep it? We have done so much dang work on it. Last summer we redid the teak decks and all of the brightwork is ready for finishing (I have not...

Wood Boat - Insurance and Pending dilemna

I agree with the above whole heartedly. In my opinion the scuttle butte about how much work wood boats take is over blown. Its true that a wood boat will absorb as much work as you want to put in to it - but thats not the same thing as saying it needs all that work. I think the ride of the...

Wood Boat - Insurance and Pending dilemna

So - I have a 32' Wooden Grand Banks (1972). I love it. The hull is sound and its in good overall condition. There is nothing I dislike about it but I do dislike that it suffers what appears to me to be a prejudice* (justified or not) against wood boats. Wooden GB's are a fraction of...

    Ford Lehman 120 Bad cylinder

    Ford Lehman 120 Bad cylinder

Well you might be right. That seems way overly pesimistic. I'm not so sure though. The quote I got for machining the crank was $350. Of course I could have everything machined, but even then, even with a new piston and new rings, gasket etc I don't see how the cost approaches that of a new...
