    What's your next, immediate voyage?

Four-day trip to Catalina with my son in about four weeks. We plan to go to Cat Harbor (it's on the "back side" of the island). We'll be meeting up with a bunch of friends from yacht clubs up and down the SoCal coast. :D

    Catalina

If you're not familiar with Emerald, I suggest that you not try to leave the Cove by going between Indian Rock and the shore towards Arrow Point. There's a nasty reef along there that's just underwater. I know a couple of people who tried to get out that way and did memorable damage to their...

    Catalina, Whites Cove

Notice the phrase "outside the mooring field". Someone mentioned anchoring between the moorings. Don't do that. The moorings are fore and aft and with any changes in wind direction you would be playing bumper boats with the vessels that are moored because they won't swing.

I agree about TJ and Rosarita. The nice thing about the drive down and back is that you skirt around both cities when you are on the toll road and when you are going between the toll road and the border crossing. If you are going by sea there doesn't seem to be much of a problem (I did that...

    Ensenada, MX

I visited Ensenada last month (my second visit this year). The tourist area near the harbor is, IMO, safer than the downtown areas of many SoCal cities. I have been visiting Ensenada for more than 35 years and I have never had any problems.

    Catalina, Whites Cove

I have seen boats anchored in the small inlets between Long Point and the Isthmus but I have not anchored in that area myself. The area around Whites is supposed to be good holding ground, and many of my friends have anchored there. Offhand I don't know much about the depths; check your charts...

Help...advice on time to go Ensenada to Seattle...on 60 Motoryacht LRC?

A number of my friends have used Baja Naval, but mostly for "cosmetic" jobs; painting (think AwlGrip, hull and deck) and bottom jobs. They all give the yard high marks. Offhand I can't think of anyone who has had them do mechanical or electrical work. Their prices used to be very good but like...

    What's your moorage rate?

Thirty-four foot slip in Oceanside is $510 per month with unmetered water and 30-amp power. San Diego county thinks I am using some "public" space, so they charge me about $130 per year plus about $300 per year property tax. Single slips, concrete docks. Shipyard in the harbor can do moderate...

    Google Earth Question

Yeah, you can put a lot of functionality in 100,000 lines of program code. So far I have found OpenCPN most useful for pre-plotting routes. I print the region of the chart containing one or two routes along with the waypoints and put the pages in a vinyl sheet protector. Navigation in SoCal...

    Google Earth Question

Step 1: read the User's Guide. You'll find a topic on "quilting" that will explain how to glue adjacent charts together electronically. Step 2: I don't know what chart format(s) are in use by our northern neighbors. The User's Guide lists the formats that OpenCPN supports. Caveat: NOAA raster...

    Google Earth Question

To open a chart in OpenCPN, you must first run the program. You can do that either by clicking the OpenCPN program icon on your desktop or through the Start menu. When the program is running, you will see a row of icons along the top of the program window. Click on the icon with the image of a...

    Google Earth Question

Mike - You might want to look at OpenCPN. It's an Open Source navigation program that can use both raster and vector charts. You can download the charts free from NOAA. The program runs on Windows and maybe other operating systems (I haven't looked into that aspect). You can plot any number of...

A very good friend of mine owns Boats Juanitos in the harbor. I have known Juan for nearly 35 years and he has always been helpful and accommodating. His rates are competitive and his dock is close to Baja Naval and a short walk to town. His dock is simple (wood) and not very fancy. Juan can...

    Frustrating Experience at Oceanside Marina

Wifey B: As far as I know the ice cream parlor is still there. I'm not allowed to eat sweet stuff so I stay away from temptation. Next time you're in town, drop by the parlor and post a report. :D ____________ Dick

    Frustrating Experience at Oceanside Marina

Yeah, the harbor entrance gets downright nasty when there is a southerly swell running. Part of the problem is that you need to make a 90-degree turn to starboard as soon as you pass the jetty which can put you crosswise to the swell coming in the entrance. If you don't turn soon enough (within...

    Frustrating Experience at Oceanside Marina

I am a member of Dana Point Yacht Club and our club has an annual cruise to Oceanside. Since Oceanside YC doesn't have a great deal of transient berthing, our members have used the marina transient berthing facilities. I don't recall any complaints about the harbor staff or the payment policies...

    Frustrating Experience at Oceanside Marina

Chiming in as an Oceanside tenant. I have not had any problems with the harbor staff in my 3+ years in the harbor. I deal with them about once every month or two and the process has always been amiable. As for check vs. credit card, that's a city thing. The city recently took over all of the...

    What's your next, immediate voyage?

Four days at Catalina Harbor at the end of the month. For those not familiar with Catalina Island, Cat Harbor is at the Isthmus, which is about 2/3 of the way from east end to west end, and it's on the open ocean side. This will be the first cruise for Cheers (I don't count the delivery voyage...

    Happy Canada Day, eh!

Spent Canada Day in 2009 docked at Coal Harbor in Vancouver. After a wonderful dinner at the restaurant in the harbor (Cordero?), we spent the evening watching superb fireworks along with a lot of really nice Canadian folks. To our northern friends, congrats on your special day! ____________ Dick
