Dinghy naming, is it a thing?

Thanks for all the advice! I hadn't considered the security issues... I guess I'm not frequently in a situation where I have to worry about such things. Still, it feels like a solid excuse to avoid bothering with putting a name on the dinghy. Thanks again! mike

Dinghy naming, is it a thing?

What's the custom for names on dinghys? Are they traditionally left blank? Do they carry the name of the vessel they are associated with? Do they get their own name? I remember seeing my boat (years before I bought it) with a dinghy on it that had a cute, diminutive version of the bigger...

Turns out, I should have replaced this impeller sooner

Here's the pile of impeller bits that I pulled out of the oil cooler. I think there's more than one generation of failed impeller here!

Turns out, I should have replaced this impeller sooner

I dunno, if chunks got as far as the exhaust hose, I'm not gonna worry about them. I just don't want them blocking the tubes in the HX's. Yeah, There are several alarms that I would like to have installed. So far, I don't have any of them :( I just glance at the coolant temp gauge fairly...

Turns out, I should have replaced this impeller sooner

Coolant temp shot up over 220 fairly suddenly the other day. I was able to bring it back down under 200 by throttling back, so I limped back to the marina (I hadn't got far). This is about 3 years old, maybe 300 hours... I reckon I need to be looking at annual replacements. Time to start...

    Derelicts on the Columbia River

Treat em like car batteries. Everyone that buys a new boat has to turn in an old one, or pay a fee :D

If you need insurance, here is who to call!

Same here, just got my renewal from Progressive. Rate increase of 150%... I've never made a claim. I called the usual suspects to get some competitive quotes, and all of them said my boat was too old... Very frustrating

What size packing for my stuffing box?

Ha, mine turned out to be 1/4". It was the smallest of the sizes that I had bought :)

    Looking for Lehman inner coolers

If you bypass you intercooler, you will likely lose some power at the upper end. It might not make much difference at low power settings. I wouldn't think that intake air temps coming directly off the turbo would damage the engine... Plenty of turbo diesels around that don't have...

What size packing for my stuffing box?

I had to repack my rudder shaft recently. I didn't know what size it was, so I just bought a couple feet of every size that seemed likely. I didn't want to get it all taken apart and then realize that I had to run to the store for a different size while water poured into the boat... Total...

    Interesting boats

I would love to find out more about this boat! Here's what I've been able to glean from google: It's a 1953 71ft Feadship. Steel Hull, twin Detroit 6-110's USCG Vessel # 267255 It was bought new by the Sheaffer Pen co. in 1953 and named the "Wasp II" (W. A. Sheaffer Pen Co.). I wonder if...

    Strange Anchor Light Problem

I had an anchor light problem, and it turned out to be corrosion in the plug at the base of the mast. A shot of contact cleaner in the plug sorted it out.

    1980 MT 36 layout questions

My 1977 40ft double cabin has a HIN that starts with ETY40. It's pretty close to 40ft not counting the pulpit or the swim platform. My money is on this being a 37ft boat :)

    Engine starting conundrum

Your description definitely points to the port engine starter pulling lots of amps. With that much current flowing, I wouldn't be fooling with cables and connections. They are obviously tight enough to put a serious load on your pair of parallel batteries. I agree with the plan to put a big...

Is Your GPS Ready for the April 6th Week Rollover

I've got a rather ancient Standard Horizon CP150 with firmware dated 2001. It seems to be working just fine after the rollover. The correct date and time are showing anyway. Maybe after the 1999 fiasco, they set up the firmware for future rollovers?

    Trawler / Hello

Remantling :) What you do after you have dismantled your fireplace... I would guess, probably not more than 20K pounds. Unless you are just going a very short way, I'm thinking this job is worth paying the pros to do.

    What's your cruising speed.

We run about 1700 RPM for about 7 kts. Boat is a 40ft Marine Trader with a single 120 Lehman. I don't have a fuel flow meter, but the engine seems happy at that speed and it doesn't go through much fuel... I recently used a hand strobe to verify my tachs, and it runs about 2400RPM at WOT...
