    Liveaboard aluminium sub 36f boats?

$650,000 gets you a new one of these: https://eaglecraft.com/portfolio-item/36-cruiser/ If you place your order now you can get it delivered in about 12 to 15 months. We don’t have an Eagle Craft boat, but love our Kingfisher aluminum boat. We live on it all summer, but wouldn’t think of...

    PNW - Winter heating options

I have the dessicant dehumidifier Retriever mentions. It works amazingly well and a lot lighter in weight than a compressor version. I use it in our camper as well as on the boat. This particular dehumidifier is known to develop a “ticking” sound, but doesn’t seem to impact its effectiveness.

My take on a Ranger Tug

Get what you feel safe with. Maintain that kicker motor so it will start reliably. But also become a maintenance fanatic on your main engine. Then you might never need that kicker motor.

Do it my way, or no way at all attitudes...

Many years ago (40 or so) I read an article on rescues. It stated that the biggest reason a victim will die in an otherwise recoverable situation is that the rescuers disagree on what to do. About 20 years ago a friend and I managed to save my wife’s life during a sea kayaking trip. I strongly...

Do it my way, or no way at all attitudes...

A lot of folks don’t pick up on the tone of their own posts. In person to person conversation, they may not hear the tone of their own voice. It’s actually a skill to be self aware. Lots of folks put their time and energy elsewhere and neglect this skill. We all have holes in our personalities...

    Reality check on chain size

    Why the white coated chain?

    Reality check on chain size

FWIW, we purchased a 15kg (33lb) Rocna Vulcan. According to the Rocna fitment guide our boat falls between two sizes. So I went with the larger of the two, which fits our bow roller and pulpit perfectly. I would not want to have gone any larger for fitment reasons.

Thanks for this input. I’m thinking of getting a Fortress anchor as our second. I’m also planning to build a wood dinghy, so not tearing it up with chain sounds like a good idea!

    Reality check on chain size

Here is what I think I have learned from this thread so far, including some things that have been implied (in no particular order): 1. There is more than one good way to build and use an anchor rode. 2. You want to design your rode for the worst case scenario you are likely to encounter. 3...

    Reality check on chain size

In Washington you can go on line and get a 30 day towing permit for $20. In Oregon you have to call, but the process is simple. If we head across country I’m not particularly worried about getting permits. Towing a boat with a 10’ beam has been easy. But over the years I’ve driven a lot of...

    Reality check on chain size

Kingfisher website: https://kingfisherboats.com/ Speed was never that big a deal for us. We wanted a trailerable boat that we could spend a month or more at a time on. I wanted engines that I didn’t have to crawl into a hole to maintain. We wanted just enough systems and comfort to enjoy...

    Reality check on chain size

Yes! The idea is to take it to perhaps the Great Loop, Lake Powell, launch from further north in the Puget Sound or Strait of Georgia, etc... It tows amazingly well. Already we’ve towed it back and forth over two mountain passes in the Cascades. I’ve got a few pictures of it sitting on the...

I’ll get some pictures of the canvas. Rainier Industries did a great job on it. And thank you for the kind comment about our boat. It is just the right size for us.

About 45 knots...not that we ever go that fast. Too many deadheads in Puget Sound.

    Reality check on chain size

This is the best I can do right now. The night photos were taken in Seattle last October when we were there for a Keb’ Mo’ concert, and before we had the canvas and davit installed. The purple light reflecting on our boat is from a nearby building. The photo showing the canvas is pretty lousy...

I already made my own! It looks really nice I must say. I’m getting the hang of this splicing thing. I didn’t think about cleating the bridle to the bow and the spring cleat. Thanks!

Got it. I think we will up size the chain length this winter while we are doing other things to the boat.

    Reality check on chain size

Yes, these are issues I want to address as well. I don’t want to freak fellow boaters out when the current and wind shift and our boat slides quickly/erratically in response. I don’t want to be freaked out either. I will experiment with your idea about cleating off to a side cleat. We also...
