    Gps

Has anyone mentioned the plasma vs. LCD issue ? You can have a cheap laptop, just make sure it has the LCD screen for best daylight visibilty.

Do you really need a lower helm?

I have a 40' Nova Sundeck and single hand a lot. A lower helm is essential ONLY if there's a door next to the lower helm, otherwise, it's wasted redundancy. Some bigger boats i.e. Ponderosa, do not have the lower helm door.

    Shower is hot/cold

Thanks Dave, I removed the broken accumulator tank and replaced the pump with a variable pressure model that does not require a tank. That seemed to help. Also, did you see the response to my query re: the mystery board ? I think the person that said it is a support for the keel of an...

    12 volt light fixtures

I just bought a 1988 40' sundeck trawler. The majority of the ceiling light fixtures are 8" square flush mount and are supposed to have three bulbs that snap between two metal "ears" which are the contacts. Over time the ears break off leaving the fixture with two and then one working bulb. I've...

    What is this ?

I bought a 1988 40' sundeck trawler and found this in the v-berth. It's nicely finished in thick teak ply and is 8 feet long when the two parts are bolted together.

    Shower is hot/cold

Just bought a '88 sundeck trawler (Hi, Dave). The shower in the aft stateroom works o.k. except the water comes out intermittently too hot and too cold, cycling very rapidly between the two as if in time with the pulsations of the pump. I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered anything...

Should You Use a Yacht Broker?

I am in fact in the market for a sundeck trawler. The ONLY way I will buy from a broker is if he and the seller agree that I will get a handholding session with the seller. A broker cannot know all the quirks, foibles, buttons, knobs, switches etc. of a larger boat. Sometimes yacht brokers...

Any Gulfstar owners out there ?

I'm in the market for a sundeck and really like some of the features of the Gulfstar 44 Motor Cruiser i.e.* displacement hull, standup engine room, shower in* the forward head and some other things. Was wondering if anyone knew of any quirks or foibles of the make or model.

My engines are better than yours

I posted the original question and thought I'd chime in. The discussion has been very interesting albeit somewhat esoteric at times. What I've distilled from it so far is as follows: Lehmans: good (I concur based on my experience with Ford 2715E block) Perkins: good Volvos: not so much...

My engines are better than yours

Or maybe not ... I'm in the market for a sundeck maybe 40' to 42 '. My research shows a variety of engine configurations including Lehmans, Volvos, Cats, Cummins, Perkins and an occasional Yanmar etc. I currently own a 30' Island Gypsy with a Ford Tempest. It's a British marinized 2715E Ford...
