The Standard Horizon Chart Plotter was on the boat from the previous owner and I was not familiar with Standard Horizon, I was always a Garmin guy. I called Standard Horizon and they gave me the c-maps tel number and asked what I needed. Then I asked the local Advanced Marine Electronics guy...

    Great loop - How long?

Not quite. I haven't sold my 39' sailboat in Kemah, Tx. yet. That might become my winter home. If I do sell my sailboat, we were thinking of getting an RV for winter and I know lots of sailboat people on the 3rd coast. At this point in time, we don't see ourselves becoming dirt dwellers anytime...

    Great loop - How long?

I have not yet calculated the mileage yet from NYC to the Ms. River. I used to live in NY State and I promise you that I would want to spend as much time up there as possible. Possibly haul out again in the fall and come south for the winter - by air. That would then take 3 years total. One...

    Great loop - How long?

From what I have read, quite a few loopers do it in 10 months yet others haul out for the winter season and return home to where ever that may be, for the winter and go back and continue the trip in the spring. This is usually done from 2 to 4 years. I have been thinking along the lines of the...

    Great loop - How long?

Great Loop Your plan is do-able, but definitely not practical. You would be on the wet highway almost every single day for 10 months. The trip would be miserable. In my estimation, a more practical approach would be to travel about 50 miles/day for 130 days given a 6500 mile trip. That would...

Has any built an engine driven cold plate?

I had a home made system on my sailboat that was installed by the previous owner. It used anti-freeze and water solution in the cold plates. The compressor was an air conditioner compressor from a car for the engine driven part and an old refrigerator air compressor when 120V was available. The...

Thanks, that will save me 15% on fuel and get there 15% faster. I knew there was a reason I wanted to go inland.

Mileage Markers On the Tenn-Tom, are the mile markers in statute or nautical miles?

I have got to join the 21st Century and find out what the heck you are talking about. Seriously, I am totally clueless. Eventually I will find a patient person and show me. I know I am missing a lot.

Pack Mule We wont be going up that far north this year, but early next spring we will definitely be up there. I will even buy the first round of beers.

Tenn-Tom Waterway It’s finally spring time and that means back to cruising time for us. We will be heading from Pascagoula, Ms. to Mobile Bay and then northward to the Tennessee River. What is the: 1) Average time per Lock? This includes waiting/standing by, getting...

When Does a Boat Become a Yacht?

LMFAO. That is the best description I have ever heard for someone of my stature. I personally dislike the term 'yacht' because it is presumptuous, especially with the non-boating crowd. When people find out I have a boat and live aboard, their first reaction is "oh, you have a yacht". I...

    Ethanol Free Gasoline

Is there a difference in older gasoline engines (1986) whether I use ethanol free gas or the regular stuff. I'm sure this has been covered before but I'll ask it again for the latest info. Thanks in advance.

appears to be quite fuel efficient

I'm not sure if fuel efficient is the same as dollar efficient. If you want or need a certain amount of cubic space you can either go long and narrow or short and fat. The short and wide will cost less in slip fees and haul-outs, at least on most occasions.

I just took another look at a Rocna on Defender and I remembered why I don't have one. I have an 'enclosed' bow roller and I don't think it would work on my system. As a spectator in the gladiatorial games between the Rocna and the other guy I tend to think they are probably pretty much the...

Damn, you type fast. And yes, anchors are a dangerous topic and yes, I started a 'which gun' thread a while ago. man I can start some $hit.

Speaking of anchoring, I have a claw as my main anchor and a Danforth as my back-up. And a small plow for an emergency stern anchor. The reason for the claw being the primary is because I can only fit one anchor on the bow roller and the Danforth can easily be hung from the bow rail with an...

Yes it has, thank you. I'm used to sailing and when coastal sailing, anchorages are relatively unlimited. Inland and ICW, especially in La. not so much. They can be found, but you have to work at it. Don't know anything about inland waterways but I assume they would be relatively easy to find...

Sorry for the error It wasn't me who said, "I didn't get an impression anyone wanted you to give up anything, just clarify your remark." I made a mistake and attributed someone else's remark to you. My bad. Anyway, moving on, overall I still think you have a great site and I will...

Active Captain: You stated "I'm not sure where the 50% comment comes from." You asked and I responded. Active Captain: Now you are saying "I didn't get an impression anyone wanted you to give up anything, just clarify your remark." My statement was based on your previous statement. "I just...

I cant speak for the Tenn-Tom because I haven't been on there yet. So lets look at Port Arthur Tx. City Dock. I didn't see any mention that this is not a safe area. There were about 5 or 6 drunks hanging out there and when we asked if this was the city dock, we were told that "the honky dock...

BandB Thanks for the info. If we go to Wheeler this year, we will definitely go to Ky. Lake next year. And if we do that, we might travel down late fall/early winter to the Bahamas. We just really want to get off the 3rd coast for hurricane season. Been dodging and worrying about them...

Thanks Moon for the heads-up I have been playing leap frog with my van. since Tx. I will probably leave it in gautier. ms. and then figure out where if possible I can get a plane, train or bus back to it.

Thanks for the info PKing. I am fairly familiar with that area from many years back. And, yes, it is worlds different. We actually are contemplating a side trip to Lulu's, Pirates Cove and Pensacola before heading north if time permits.

Thanks for the input. I was just looking east of Florence per someone's recommendation on another forum. We are now considering Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville. Still open to other ideas though.
