    GENSET: Beta(Kubota) vs. Northern Lights

10kWe - Northern-Lights M843NW3.7 = 66.2dB(A) @ 1 Meter, in the soundshield. The BETA 10 = "less than 60dB(A) @ 7 Meters, in the soundshield" per their website. BetaGen - Beta Marine Yep, they are much quieter if only you start measuring further away :) As well, we have three dealers in the...

    Stator failure?- Northern Lights 6kw

Is that charred or corroded? Also - take a look at the wet exhaust elbow...curious to its' condition.

    Stator failure?- Northern Lights 6kw

David - looks like you are on the right path: seek the root cause of he failure first. Sunchaser is correct: the small sponsons on a cat hull don't allow for lots of machinery space, and airflow is often the first casualty. We have several hundred NL gensets in the Caribbean charter cat...

    Stator failure?- Northern Lights 6kw

Guys, I think a mountain is being made out of a molehill here. Yes the gen end can ALWAYS be changed. To keep the overall length of those little sets down we use a custom built generator that integrates the fan and the flywheel. I do not remember which SAE the flywheel housing is, but in...

673's have a integrated fan/flywheel combination. Good luck.

    Stator failure?- Northern Lights 6kw

We have used Taiyo on our sub-40kWe sets for the past 30+ years. Above 40kWe we use Marathon. Marathon are fine ends...Taiyo ends are equally as good. However they cost more when you get to the larger size.

What Do You Pay For Or Do Yourself

Pay for: Haul out, bottom paint, diver for zincs (water is too cold for my candy a$$ here in the NW). Myself: Wash/Wax/Polish, Interior cleaning/Teak Oiling, electrical repairs (AC/DC)/additions/modifications, Engine maintenance/repairs, Drivetrain maintenance/repairs, genset...

    Stator failure?- Northern Lights 6kw

Those gen ends are rather bullet proof...surprised to hear smoked...I see you mention it is in a sound shield. How is the airflow to the rear of the genset (air inlet) - is there some obstruction? Typically it is better to replace the gen end alone, vs a local re-wind. That said, rewinding...

    American Tug 395, hull #12...

Volume doesn't equal quality. Just as SOG doesn't limit enjoyment of your boat. If it sounds good to you that's what matters! What is specified above will be more than adequate to allow you to relax and enjoy the time with good tunes in the background...or foreground. Speaking of generating...

    American Tug 395, hull #12...

Just think of the concert you could enjoy on the hook, beer in hand, feet up... I understand the wife factor: I have a dedicated music room at home (no, that picture was not my setup), and 3" full range speakers on the boat with a tiny sub hidden in a cabinet...it's all a matter of real estate...

Twistedtree is correct: biggest issue is filling the secondary filter with "clean" fuel out of the tank to prime the system which does allow small particles to get into the common rail injectors. The proper way with any high pressure injection system is to use a secondary pump to pull fuel...

There are no mechanical engines available in the 70-300HP range we are looking at that are meeting Tier III. The new engines will be common rail injected. As far as the manufacturer of the base engine, I need to keep that confidential until we are further down the road.

The goal is to have the first New Lugger series to the market next year (2017). We have base engine selection done, and are working on marinisation now. After we have a Marinised engine, we must retest emissions, tweak fuel tables and controls as necessary, and test for final emissions...

I do happen to know: Lugger is the trade name for Northern Lights/Alaska Diesel in-house Marinisation of industrial Diesel engines, used for both propulsion and prime movers for generation. Current Lugger Marinized engines are available for USEPA Tier III (which is the current emissions...

New Here (I know, original title!)

dhays - Yes, the #2 items from your reference are the first things, and that list is short: fix a couple raw water leaks that only appear at WOT, repair/replace ER vapor sensor and replace ER lighting with Vapor-Proof lighting...remember it's gas! The #1 item list is: new flares and a new...

Well, I bought it...and the surveyor came up with a decent sized punch-list. Most items on the list are "what they did in 1973 is not how we do it today". No mechanical, structural or electrical defects. Now I have the remainder of June to get it ready for the long trip around. Did I also...

New Here (I know, original title!)

Art - thanks for the link, I actually read that one last week and it helped me get off the stick on looking more at gas boats. Doesn't help that I am a marine diesel mechanic by trade. Worse, I know gas engines just as well up to current OBD II. In the end, I'll probably not ever get to the...
