    Update on Russian Trawler#2

Actually, I was talking to a company today about this very thing. They bring a crew and can spray all the living spaces in just a few hours. I like the idea. The only reservation I have is that they used foam around the portlights and there is a lot of rust underneath. They sprayed directly...

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

There is a bucket under the stuffing box, which is currently almost empty and what's in there is frozen. Whatever is in the bilge there won't freeze so I'm guessing the majority of whats in there is the antifreeze I spilled winterizing the engine. That would be on top of the oil and grease and...

Seems a lot of rust converters work this way. They convert the rust to zinc phosphate.

This is a good tip, and thanks! If you are ever in my area, let me know. There is much better vodka :) By the way, owatrol has a huge line of products and they are available here! Thanks for this!

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

I still have the engine room's oily bilges to deal with, the lazerette and the chain locker. I'm afraid you'll have to manage on your own :)

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

A bit of touch up left to do, but the forward cabin is ready for construction to begin. The ballast in here is less colorful because we found a brand of paint that can be applied down to -20 and dries in 15 minutes, but they only have black, white, rust color and grey. Anyway, now we are on to...

Will do! I will be moving to the engine room soon. We are still iced in, so not much I can do with the engine at the moment.

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

Hi Eric, When the foam is in place, it doesn't seem to be much of an issue unless a gap develops between the foam and steel. It is a pretty dry boat, from what I experienced so far (except for that time it sunk). Most of the superficial rust was on the ceiling which would make sense as it was...

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

Hey guys, Thanks for the tips! Regarding Ospho and other solutions, I am using a Russian product that turns the rust into zinc. Very unpleasant. I will take a pic of the bottle tomorrow when I am back on the boat. Taking a break today. Here is what we are dealing with. This styrofoam...

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

Yes, the deck plates held it in place. I have stripped the front cabin down to the steel walls. Anyone who uses regular styrofoam to insulate a boat deserves to have glitter spilled in their carpet. At least it wasn't glued in place. The worst rust I have seen on the boat is on the...

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

I was CEO of an IT company (hired, so no sweet exit). Now I am a VP at a company that has offices here and scattered all over Europe, but based in Ft Lauderdale. They want me to move there eventually, but my plan is to move around Europe on the boat for a year or so first. My job is not...

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

@KnotYet This is great advise. I intend to pay for the exterior paint. I assume your plan would also work on the interior? Right now I am grinding, rust converter, acetone, epoxy enamel paint (2 or 3 coats). There is no paint on the interior steel, so needlegun has been unnecessary so far...

    Update on Russian Trawler#2

Thanks Pete and Eric! I have read multiple times on this forum about not having generators inside the boat and it is apparently not allowed in the US(?). This makes me feel a lot better. It is loud, but I don't intend to use it often or for very long. Time will tell.

Yes, she picked the colors and does all the painting. I do all the dirty work. The ballast was secured the same way it is currently secured...gravity :)

My Favorite Way To Make Coffee

I use a moka. Not popular in North America because of percolators, but I highly recommend it. Super simple and makes amazing coffee. Easy to clean and no filters, plastics or disposable waste outside of the used grounds. Highly recommend.
