    Aft Cabin Trawlers

OA aft cabin I bought a 43' 1982 Ocean Alexander aft cabin, twin diesel trawler in 2000 primarily for a commuter apartment in the Bay Area. I looked at many boats for 6 months and none had the sense of space I felt sitting on the sofa on "Darlin" and looking forward to the V berth and aft to...

    Starboard Countertop

I had "Corian" type material installed in my galley 12 years ago and it has worked well It was glued over the old formica after the fillials were sawed off. It includes lift panels to access bins below. At the same time I had marble installed on the dinette and counter top. Not recommended...

Why Move from Sailboat to Trawler?

I have both, an OA 43 and a 34 C&C. The OA is in the Sea of Cortez and the C&C is in Ketchikan. I spend summer in Alaska, winter in Mexico. The trawler is well equipped with every convenience, solar, freezer, wd, ac. I stay on a mooring ball. Quite comfortable. And cruise to local islands...

Replace or eliminate the 2 burner electric stovetop?

I removed my galley fiddles and covered my formica with Corian type material years ago. I used an infustrial epoxy to glue it to the old laminate. It has worked well for 10 years. Nice upgrade.

    Folding bicycles

I have 2 West Marine Port Riders I bought new 10 yrs ago. I dont recommend them. They are a bit too flimsy and some parts have rusted, I had storage bags made for them. Seems for $300 they could afford stainless hardware. I like the Dahon design.

    New head for Black Dog

Big job, is it quieter than the standard Raritan "growler"? I recently replaced my master suite Raritan with a Dometic. Much better, it is still noisy but better bowl, seat and flush flow. My master suite toilet goes to a Raritan Electro Scan processor.

    What type CB for refer/freezer?

Wow, direct current to the battery could be a long run and will require heavy guage cable plus significant current loss. I gave up on DC refers long ago. I use a boat sized Whirlpool Arcos, made in Mexico AC refer with good results, I celebrated the day I trashed my old "Nevercold" Norcold a...

    MS 390 Vibration

Complicated but most likely the prop cavitation, I went through a number of props until I got ones I like. 3 blade, 4 blade finally a 5 blade a inch bigger with more pitch. It runs fine to 1,600 RPM. Then it "whistles" a high pitch ringing sound that goes away at 2200 RPM, This is a sweet...

    Bilge pumps & float switches

I've use Rule 1500 with internal switch with good service for many years on my 50' OA trawler, I recently replaced the small bilge pump on my 34 C&C and had to try a few different types to get one that did not cycle constantly. It is located in the bilge between the keel bolts. I think an...

Need advice for appliances, gas or electric, if you had a choice

I love propane. Nothing worse than firing up the genny to make electricity when you are enjoying a nice quiet sunset in a remote anchorage. Consider adding soar and a big lithium house bank as well for essential dc needs.

    Tender Service on a Davit??

My 11 ft whaler hangs on a davit at the back of my boat. The 15 hp motor hangs on the transom. Muffs work for the flush, otherwise I run the skiff to the shop for maintenance

    Head chemicals

Flushing odor may be coming from your feed hose, especially if you are using raw water. My aft toilet feed line has to run 10 ft from the through hull fitting. It makes a great petri dish for multiple foul smelling organisms. I added a manifold of 2" pipe to the feed line near the connetion...
