Cost/difficulty to replace all 6 cutless bearings? 2000 Grand Banks 42C.

Back in the spring I had six bearings replaced on my DeFever 50 at Crackerboy in Ft Pierce. It cost $4000 which included two shaft seals. A big variable is labor cost, i.e. how easy it is to remove the old bearings.

Exercising and Fitness while Living Aboard

I am an avid cyclist and carry my bike in the cockpit with a canvas cover. I can take it ashore in the dinghy without problem. I also carry a small rear wheel trainer and set it up on the flybridge or aft deck. I love exploring new areas by bike but I try to avoid busy roads. I tend to lose...

    Underwriting practices

We used an insurance broker to find a policy for our newly purchased boat. The carrier with the best quote required us to haul the boat in the event of a named storm. Our marina is 30mi upriver from the coast and the nearest boatyard that can haul our boat is 20mi closer to the ocean. I asked...

Need lockable y-valve in US Waters?

My boat did not have a Y valve so you could not pump directly overboard. Waste was pumped from the bowl to the holding tank via a macerator type head. To empty the tank, the thru hull had to be open and waste was pumped overboard via another macerator. No gravity drain. The USCG regulations...

Dealing with a wake from boat passing from behind

Did the CG vessel give you any type of signal he was going to pass e.g. horn, VHF call? IMO, if he did not, given the manner in which he passed, he was acting irresponsibly and I would report him for sure. Even if he was in a hurry to assist another boater he is responsible for making his...

    Time for a new boat,

Good advice! In 2017 I bought a 2013 Cutwater 28. We really liked it. It was easily towed behind my F250 (not dually). We quickly decided we needed a bigger boat and sold it in 2019. The 8.5ft beam is great for towing but not so great for stability. She tends to rock with the slights wake/swell...

    Wifi boosters - why not?

I agree. Most marina wifi's are very slow and frustrating. I've used the Groove and Bullet but found that using cellular hotspot on my phone with a WeBoost cellular booster antenna works a lot better. It' s also a lot simpler to connect. In situations when I cannot connect I read a book... on my...

    Insurance

I see your point but they asked for total length of both boats. 55 - 36 = 19. In retrospect I could have played dumb and given the brand length but with my luck they would figure it out after I bought the boat.

    Insurance

I have a 34 with a LOA of 36. I'm not sure how the builder came up with 34. The specs state a "hull length" of 32'9" and a LOA of 36. I think thats LWL.

    Insurance

I'm selling my 36ft trawler and looking to buy a 49ft boat with LOA 55'. Geico/BoatUS said they would not insure it because its more than 15ft longer than my current boat. I asked if there was anything I could do to get coverage, ie. hire a captain, get my captains license, etc. Nope. Just have...

    The Long Wait

I feel blessed. Several years ago I found a one-man auto upholstery shop to do some work on my cars and boat cushions. He did great work, on time, was very reasonably priced, and also does boat work. I tip him generously each time and offered to adopt him.

    What Books to Read

Two of my favorites; The Bounty Trilogy by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall. It is a three book collection. The first, "Mutiny on the Bounty", covers events leading up to and including the mutiny. The second book, "Men Against the Sea", is about the incredible journey of Capt Blye and...

Ranger tug 31 or beneteau st 34

I owned a 2013 Cutwater 28 before moving up to a 2013 ST 34. (The Cutwater is made by Fluid Motion which also makes the Ranger Tug). We originally wanted to move up to a RT 31 because we felt that Fluid Motion made a good product and offered great customer support. We chose the ST 34 because it...

    onboard first aid cpr eqipment

A comment about prescription meds on a pleasure boat; I admit that I don't know all the laws regarding prescription meds on a boat but just to be safe we wrote up a Ship's Formulary and had it signed by a physician. It basically lists all the prescription meds, their doses, and amounts. I think...

Reasonable buyer's broker fee if I'm selling boat myself

My current seller's broker agreement expires soon and I'm thinking of selling my boat myself without a broker. If I am approached by a broker who says he has a potential buyer, what is a reasonable fee to pay him? When there are two brokers involved, the seller's broker usually gets half of the...

    Now What?

Back in our sailing days (early 90's) we got caught in thick fog motoring up the Elizabeth River in Norfolk. No radar or chart plotter. We heard a tugboat captain announce that he was guiding a freighter down the river. We found a channel marker and circled it and announced our position over the...

My list of boat pre-purchase questions

This is a very interesting discussion. I just listed my boat for sale and I looking to buy a larger one. I'm perplexed by those who say they would find another buyer if presented with a list of questions. My experience in selling a couple of boats (5) was that there wasn't a waiting list of...

    Humorous/cute boat names

Many years ago I wanted to name our sailboat "Breakwind". Wife wouldn't let me. In retrospect that was a good thing. I think about that every time I hail a bridge or marina. In an attempt to be original we named her "Sea Fever" after the poem only to discover in our travels that we weren't very...

    Dirty Holding Tank, Needs cleaning!

Hose odor My question is how to get the stink out of vent and dump hoses. I cleaned my tank really well and don't get any odor when flushing. But when I crawl into the hold where the hoses are located I can really smell it. Is there any way to deodorize them so I don't have to replace them?
