    Sandblasted and stuck in Canada

Even though it is counter intuitive, washing open blisters with water is standard operating procedure. The idea is that the water gets a in and washes some of the blister causing salts out .I think you may have just developed a new strategy. Submersion will pressurize the water slightly. Make...

    Hurricane concerns

Old school logic was for boats to depart Maine November 1 and not sooner. Lately people have pushed that up, for obvious reasons, cold being one. Personally I like to start out around Oct 1 and even then I can take my time,(7 knot boat). We have a heater and viable inside helm so not worried...

How low to run fuel tanks?

What would be the rationale of never going below ⅓ full. If that were my case I'd have 90 unusable gallons of diesel. Tanks are as a rule built with the suction at a natural low spot. You should be able to get down to about 5 gallons if you watch it close, but often sight glasses don't show...

    Propane tank replacements

Is the enclosure original to the manufacturer of the boat, and was it legal then? I ask that because it would only pass muster of some surveyors and or insurance companies now. Lid must have vapor tight gasketed lid and be secured with a hand operable latch.

    Is my chain undersized?

That's plenty of anchor. You might want to review your whole Windlass situation.

Proper way to ballast a boat?

Moparharn, C’mon, rolled down so that the “bridge was in the water”?!?!?! What does that mean? Flying bridge? And you weren’t thrown off? And you went boating again? And in one case it was from a wake? This seems a little much.

oh no! have to drill into my roof

Note also that any of these store bought cable clams you will be drilling four holes, one for the wire and three(at least) for screws, and that is for each wire. PVC, make it big and group your wires.

oh no! have to drill into my roof

Here is an idea for you, one that I have used on occasion. I like to use PVC pipe as a conduit thru the deck. PVC glues well, can be cut using a wood saw, doesn't expand and contract much, and is available. And bigger is better, because there will always be more wires than you think. Choose...

    having an exclusively towed tender

That 15 foot tow line will only work in calm seas. You might get away with it for a while, but don’t limit yourself. Short painter leads to high shock loads.

    having an exclusively towed tender

My rule of thumb is “the mothership has to be big enuf to carry the small boat”. NOT towing is so much better, less stress on mothership, small boat and crew. I would love to bring my 13 whaler along, but at 37 feet, the mothership really doesn’t hack it.

Anyone cruising in BC now ?

Firehoser, I can’t agree more. I hate to get political, no I better not. It’s just that in a certain state that I am very familiar with, the redneck non-science troop is challenging the Governor’s powers to keep the state somewhat locked down. Funny how non-science resembles NON-SENSE.

On the other hand, maybe there will be a miracle and it will all just go away.

Anyone cruising in BC now ?

Why the border will remain closed? Why would they open it. Everyone is suspect of having Covid19. States are not encouraging people to travel between states, two examples being Maine and Alaska. Am I wrong that if you go to Alaska that you are asked to self quarantine for 2 weeks? That is...

Anyone cruising in BC now ?

Why would they want to let anyone from the states up in BC? We have botched this thing masterfully, some are quite proud of our successes and we deserve to stew in our own juices.

Bahamas Locked Down. No one else in.

Okay Larry M, I stand corrected on the Bahamas cruising permit. But read the letter. All foreign boats encouraged to leave Bahamas. It would be very USA to not abide by that. Also, shelter in place, no boating, cruising, etc No going ashore. Period Groceries must be delivered. Fuel...

Anyone cruising in BC now ?

Why isn’t Kiwani just fine. They have been quarantined aboard their vessel, I’m assuming just the two of them. Were all US citizens required to leave Canada. If not and assuming they are on a cruising permit, they are “staying at home”. I would think the only possible issues at this point...

    My battery set-up

If you are building a new house bank system, why would you install brand new “traditional” flooded lead acid batteries? Imho, they are antiquated. They do work, but need very careful maintenance to get peak performance. If you don’t want to take the plunge into the future of Lithium, which...

Grand Banks 32 as a liveaboard

Wife and I spent over a year cruising, actively on the go, DownEast loop, Maine to Maine, then Bahamas 5 months then back to Maine. Tight but doable. A GB 32 would have seemed huge. That being said, as soon as we got home we started looking and ended up with very serviceable Monk designed 37...

    Backup anchor choice

Personally, I like to have a backup anchor that I can load into my dinghy in case I need to set it away from the mothership. For that reason, One of my seconds is a Fortress. I’ve also found that I can swim with a fortress and six feet of chain if need be. Dan
