    Trawler brands with semi-bluewater seaworthiness...

I think you need to get out on a trawler or two. But it sounds like with your lack of experience nobody will charter a 60 ft boat to you. This lack of experience may also be a problem when it comes to getting insurance for a big adventure as you have planned. Walk before you run.

Troubleshooting Perkins Fuel Shut off Solenoid

Just today on my P 6.354T my fuel shut off solenoid started chattering when energized. It still works, just has a new noise. Could be a bad connection somewhere but I'm thinking seriously if installing a cable for manual stop. I've had that on other diesels,. pretty much fool proof.

    Vatrer Lifepo4 batteries

I went with Epoch, for a few reasons. #1, also recommended by Rod at MHT, And also Panbo. #2, heated, because I boat in Maine #3, Bluetooth reporting, This is absolutely necessary so you can know the health of your system. Yes, a few dollars more but I felt worthwhile. Also, great customer...

    Refurbishing Teak decking

You need to first assure yourself that you have no soft spots or wetness in the sub deck. IMHO, if you have either of those things, especially wetness then it is time to take a deep breath. If you just sand it all up nice and pretty you may just be covering up future serious problems...

rudder question (marine trader 40 sundeck)

Remove steering from tiller You will likely need to unhook the steering inside from the tiller arm so that you can turn the rudder 90 degrees

Manatee needs a new engine, what to do?

Beta Marine is tops. Talk to Stanley. Don't overpower! The Beta are mostly Kubota and mechanical so you can actually fix something yourself.

    Backing plate material

Phenolic plastic. You can get it by the sheets, probably from McMaster it glues well. You can epoxy it right to the inside of your hull. It drills. It machines well, It won't absorb water. You can make a nice wide backing plate and make it any thickness you want. Just stack them up

Hydraulic backup on a Perkins generator?

Outside the box This seems like a lot of work for something that might never be used. How about investing in a heavy duty battery operated drill with a chuck that fits that hand winch? Put all the thousands of dollars that you would have spent on this crazy system into making your main engine...

    Sad story - freezing batteries

News Flash You can't just leave a flooded Lead acid (FLA) battery to its own devices, they need to be charged up periodically, maybe topped off every 2 weeks. They are subject to self discharge. Thanks for sharing so others may learn this lesson

    2023 Great Loop stats

7 months We did the loop in 23/24. 7 months of underway time. Paused once for a month and another for 2 months. Never felt rushed on a 6.5 knot boat, 37 ft. One issue for people is start and end point. You really need to follow the warm weather so that in itself allows for downtime to be...

Open for suggestions from experienced sailors

My sentiment exactly. Just exactly what is your level of experience, and how much experience with this boat, how much in the way of spare parts, stabilizers?,

    Perkins T6.354 Oil Change Question

Drain plug I always change the oil hot. If you drive a couple holes (with screwdriver)in the dome end of the inverted filter BEFORE you pump the oil out it will have just a couple drips left in it. Also, there is a drain plug near the base of the filter. Use it. I don't see any way you could...

    Wet or Dry Exhaust

We used to kid around when a dry stack lobster boat would come by and say, "What, can't afford a muffler?" Nowadays I think most Maine Lobster Boats have wet exhaust.

Tow Request - What would you do?

What would you think if you were in his shoes? I don't get it, you are running an ambulance but stop around the corner for the night? Not much of an emergency as an excuse. I'd put my bow toward him an let him bring a line to you. If you can pull him out in reverse Great, that trimarran weighs...

    Schooner Mast kills one

I owned and operated the schooner Lewis R French for 18 years in the 80s, 90s and into the Ots. The Lewis R was built in 1871 and rebuilt completely in 1973-1976. As you can imagine these are different and difficult vessels to maintain, far different than trawlers. For example we are talking...

Tow Boat US boards my boat without my permisiom, knowledge, approval and now wants 9K

A sage old Coast Guard officer told me the "Rule of Threes" When threw things go wrong as a cascading chain of event, your situation can and usually does get bad, often in a hurry. I would count your leaky engines which you admit put oil in the bulge, drip pans or not. Your failed electrical...

Faster trawler than just hull speed but seaworthiness?

Maybe I'm missing something but why, if you don't want a trawler, why are you asking for help on the Trawler Forum. You should be asking this question on the "Boats that Go a Minimum of 15 Knots Forum"

    Dismal Swamp - Recent

We've been thru the Dismal several times with over 4 ft draft and wheel protected by skeg. I always have my hand on the controls ready to go to neutral in a heartbeat. All my encounters have been forward, none in the wheel. You likely won't see anything that will be a problem for your running...

    Fuel filtration, lessons learned

Some recommend installation if inline fuel pump which is fuel purpose. 1. Helps when bleeding fuel system 2. Will allow you to run on a dirty fuel filter longer, possibly much longer.
