New Helmsman model - 38 Sedan

Waterline is the brokerage side of the business. Helmsman is the new boat side of the business.

    Keku Strait conditions

DDW - I have the pre-loaded charts that come with Garmin. My only complaint is the buoys, daymarks, etc. are not as large or intensely colored as they are on a paper chart. As far as accuracy goes, they seem very good.

    Keku Strait conditions

I have transited Rocky Pass several times in last couple of years including last year, all NB. The winter of 20/21 definitely did some ice damage to the ATONS, don't know what this past winter did or did not due. As previously mentioned, the R"14" Buoy at Devils Elbow was missing but all the...

Fuel usage: "new" vs "old" diesel engines

Clean air diesels run a richer combustion mixture to promote more efficient combustion than their older counterparts. Thus, they pollute less but burn more fuel doing so. We have observed this 1st hand on several of our tugs that have had older mechanical diesels replaced with their new...

    Designing & Building Hammerhead

I would also recommend using Furuno radar, given your planned use. My suggestion would be a commercial version with a control board, something like this -

    Juneau to ABC islands?'s

Whales - Snow Pass and Cape Fanshaw area seldom disappoint. Maineman - how much fuel can you carry and what kind of range do you have with at least a 10-20% reserve? I can comfortably go 230+ NM (1.4 NMPG at 25 Kts.) before thinking about fuel on my 28' Crozier. A few reference points, from...

    AIS Transmit

I have Garmin plotter & AIS on my boat. When I entered my MMSI I'm pretty sure it said that subsequent changes or re-programming would have to done by a Garmin tech or sent out to a service center. I did have to use a laptop to run the AIS setup disc with a USB cord going into a network plug.

    Alaska Fishing Lodges

Steamboat Bay Fishing Club Another 1st class and pricy operation, I'd imagine 2022 is probably booked out. www.elcapitanlodge.com Very nice, not as pricy as S-Bay. Both of these you fly to KTN then float plane to the lodge.

Tanker ship sunk by mega-yacht near Nassau

License insurance, for example MOPS, is indeed to protect an individual & his/her license against action by the USCG. Wither MOPS or other firms offer coverage for non USCG license holders I don't know. Maritime law treats a vessel like it's own entity - the tankers P&I Club will go to the...

    Radio cord retractors ?

Anyone know of or have a good solution for getting mic cords retracted into a console / dash so they are out of the way when not being used?

    Furuno or Garmin

I see a lot of ECDIS / Plotters on many vessels, TRANSAS was one of the earliest to market and I still consider it one of the best. As far as radars go, Furuno or JRC are on 90%+ of what I see. That being said I have a Garmin for my 28' boat but would go Garmin plotter and Furuno (commercial)...

Injector Selection for DD4-71 ranges from N35 to N90- Anybody insight?

Any pics of your new boat? It must be one of GH's very early pilot boats if the hull is steel.

    Anchorages in Northern BC

    Aluminum boat corrosion

Does this boat have bottom paint? If not then the entire hull could be acting & wasting away as an anode. If it is outboard powered is the engine tilted clear of the water when not in use? Stainless propeller in salt water + unprotected alu hull = bad news. When anode(s) get installed make...

Southeast Alaska - Dock access ?

Thorne Bay should be fine, also there are public docks in Coffman Cove. If you have time to go to Point Baker, there is a dock there that's multi function, rafting up to local boats for the night is common.

    Forward Slope Pilot House Windows

I rarely see clearview's on commercial vessels anymore unless they are quite old. Heat traced windows, either filament embedded in the glass or as a film overlay have taken their place.

    Forward Slope Pilot House Windows

A functional downside to forward raked windows - if you boat in very cold WX where ice build up on the blades is a possibility, you need very strong springs to keep the wiper blade in contact with the glass along with heat traced glass, etc. That being said, my boats windows are slightly...

    Repower project

We have 9,000+ hours on a pair of QSL 9's (2,100 RPM rating) on a 40' pilot boat. Overall they have been good engines, only one injector has been replaced, all the rest are original.

    Raymarine or simrad

FWIW based on 14 years merchant marine and 20+ years piloting ships - Radar - Furuno + JRC have about 90% of the market. Atlas, Kelvin Hughes, Raymarine, Simrad, etc have the rest. ECDIS / Plotters - Transas is the best but commercial only AFAIK. All...
