    Bow Thruster vs Stern Thruster

I quit reading all the responses. But I'll comment on one issue - noise. It really doesn't matter if you have a hydraulic, electric or nuclear powered bow thruster. What makes the noise is cavitation. Most bow thrusters on smaller boats are too close to the water surface with the results air...

    Mounties are good!!

On the American side of the border, you have a very active drone program of policing the border. On both sides, just about everywhere covered with radar, though I'm not to sure on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. And although marine policing coverage doesn't seem that great, really the...

    Mounties are good!!

The RCMP boat pictured above is more a supplemental boat to marine patrol. Comox RCMP use that type of boat for example, whereas the larger RCMP boat out for patrols for a week at a time is out of Nanaimo. One of the larger boats does West coast patrol.

    Mounties are good!!

Thought you would enjoy this short video on the marine rcmp along our coast, below is a write up on them, a very small unit of four boats for the entire inside and outside passage, three on the inside and one on the outside. Note: Canadian Coast Guard is not an enforcement agency as it is in...

Are propane out boards worth considering?

Gas is everywhere and usually blessed with easy access. Propane can be harder to obtain. At my marina, I can get gas or diesel easily, for propane I need to take a taxi.

Old battery switch works, change it out?

This is a post that I think will be invaluable for folks with older boats. The question is: should I change out my working battery switch and if so why? I am linking a short five minute video by Jeff Cote, he will do a better job than I to answer, and listen to the end to see why he is such a...

    Fun New West Marine Policy

I had wind shield wiper motor problems just after an install. The motor didn't die but just slowed down so badly that basically ineffective. My refit guy also runs a small but busy chandlery. He told me it feels like to him, he should order in two of everything when he only needs, that is how...

    Pacific Northwest cruising questions

Having logged hundreds of hours and been a long term "local," I've never heard that phrase used and I'm sure the RVYC crowd would raise an eyebrow to that one as well. I agree, what do I know after living in Deep Cove for 35 years... gees'.. what was I thinking.

    Magazines

I think there is a market for a magazine specializing in used power boats including trawlers. My favourite mag out of England in my sailing days was only about used sailboats, repairs, suggestions, reviews of sailboats, restorations, etc. The name escapes me. The editors under took a study...

    Pacific Northwest cruising questions

Tip #1: Purchase the cruising guide called Waggoners, best of the cruising guides and the most extensive, especially if you will be coming up to BC frequently. Your local chandlery probably carries it. I purchase a new one roughly once every five years. When I get tips about locations from...

    Yet Another new Member

The nice thing about a major refit, more and more into the refit, the boat becomes more you and not just some cookie cutter item off the shelf.

    How big is too big?

Its a head thing, no not the flushing kind of head. I have lived full time with my wife in a 21 foot trailer at the trailer park by the Lions Gate Bridge. Then onto a 35 foot fifth wheel at the same park. Latter during a reno, my wife and I and our son and dog and cat lived in a 17 foot...

    Specs without Facebook

Not sure why the strong stand against Facebook but I know many here have the same aversion. You, by being a member here, are already a member of social media. I am the reverse, I strongly like Facebook, and the older you are the more I think it is a good thing. The problem as we get into...

    New Member-Buying a Tollycraft

You will love the speed. While others in slower trawlers and sailboats are taking forever to get the Gulph Islands from Vancouver, you will be at Porlier pass probably within an hour and a bit and be at your desired anchorage within two hours and a bit. My boat is in Comox and the most boring...

Throwing a wake and those buzzing bass boats

So my boat can go up one plane, can cruise to roughly 25 knots. I'm in a damned if you do, damned if you don't when it comes to making people happy. As noted in the early comments, a boat on plane leaves a smaller wake than when plowing through the water at displacement speed. If I go past...

    UPDATE - Lemon-aid R 27 Ranger Tug

The only "damning" comments I have heard of the Ranger/cutwater boats is from my refit guy who's main expertise is electrical/electronics in boating. He said he worked on one of the two makes, don't remember which one, and he found something strange in electrical. He said if you looked at the...

    Washington Boater's License Training

On a positive note towards our Canadian requirement, at my age I have to grow my own boat buddies. I have them take the exam more to give them vocabulary so that when I say something they will actually understand it. But as I do something with them, I still explain it as a kind of review. "So...

If the Washington card is as pathetic as the BC license, you can just do open book, and you're good to go.
