    Heading down the Baja Coast!

Kevin, do you barter/trade for the lobster or buy? I heard once that baseball caps and beer go a long way!

LED nav lights back to incandescent

Why use LEDs for nav lights? The engines are running with alternators when the nav lights are being used. No need for electrical “savings”, IMO. Just use incandescent, as the lights were designed.

    Diesel news

I’d give my opinion, but we’re not supposed to be polical!

Biggest boat for 1 1/2 persons to operate

It depends. With average wind and current conditions and other variables (docking configuration, etc.), I would feel fairly comfortable single handing about 40 feet and less.

    Stern Anchors

Occasionally we will use a stern anchor in an area with reversing tidal current. Therefore, we use a stern anchor of equal holding capacity as our bow anchor.

Navionics Boating app no longer shows current station

This is something to try. A stab in the dark. My Navionics wasn’t working any longer on my Apple devices. I deleted the app from my devices and reloaded them (they remained in the cloud). Now they work. No explanation, just something to try.

    Teak Decking thickness

Originally 5/8” with nails. However, could be paper thin if the deck was loved to death with sandpaper and/or chemicals.

    CAT Engine Gauges

Fuel temperature can’t be controlled much anyway…more to worry about nothing.

    What the heck is this

Look for an original USCG documentation number in the engine room (if ever documented). One could look up the specs for that doc number.

    Fuel Tank Vent Question

I don’t have an experienced answer to your question. However, I wonder if your transfer pump was moving the fuel too fast from the port tank and created a vacuum?

Hi, Jim. Welcome aboard! I’m on my first cup of coffee this morning. You’re probably counting sheep by now.

    stale fuel vs. tank condensation

Fifteen gallons per year? I wouldn’t be able to get home from a typical day trip until the following year!

Caulk for screwing teak to teak

Like RTF alluded, most folks claim that silicon should not be allowed on a boat! Way worse than bananas. Yes, the holes should be sealed. Sikaflex? We also use nylon spacers (about 1/8” thick) between the boards and transom. This allows water (and air) to flow easily in and out, especially...

    CA Bay/Delta Cruising Guide

The great risk to California’s water systems is politicians that refuse to construct additional water storage reservoirs. The last reservoir was built when California had a population of 18 million. Today we have close to 40 million people.

    Cat 3208 Natural exhaust risers

Your Cat parts store will have them. The part numbers are 8L3453 and 8L3454 per engine. I replaced mine about four years ago. Don’t forget to order the spray rings that go with them.

    Snap, Crackle & Pop!

We hear night-time mating noises from a little fish called a "midshipmen" in San Francisco Bay every year. At times the sound can be quite disturbing to some.

    GB42C Refrigeration genset run times

We no longer have a Grunert system. When we did we ran the genset for an hour in the morning and evening. The morning would allow us to have a cup or two of coffee and the evening run we could catch up on the tv news.

New Grand Banks owner - UK

Welcome and ask away, Trevor! We don’t know it all so everyone should be asking questions from time to time. Many times a GB36 and GB42 gave same or similar systems and components. What year is your 36?

    GB 36 Bridge Deck Removal

Another thought. If you’re moving your boat to another location on the same coast, the cost may be cheaper to hire a captain to move the boat.
