    Shrink wrap

"Almost every boat here that is stored outside is shrink wrapped. If you put in proper vents, and the correct amount of vents, you don’t have a problem. There are a very few that don’t shrink, mostly sailboats, but maybe less than 5% of the boats aren’t wrapped. If there really was a problem...

    Shrink wrap

My experience was early 90's. Common in high rise office scale. No one had heard of it in use in residential. Maybe it did exist, somewhere. But if you don't have a contractor who knows of it and can do it right, it may as well not exist.

    Shrink wrap

Personal take. Sealing things off is a two edged sword. My experience with that is more on the dirt home front. A few dirt home houses ago I moved for job reasons, and decided to build. A hot new-ish thing then was the exterior siding in Dryvit, the synthetic stucco. Coupled with stone in...

Welcome aboard As someone trying to get to the finish line in a multi-year renovation of a 120 year old home, there are a few points to be made. Your question cannot be answered online. What can and cannot be done is entirely dependent on both the condition of where it is now, and maybe more...

    Another new start for Helmsman

David I'll chip with a few thoughts here. First up, I think you really do have your head screwed on straight about all of this. As for the conversion from center console to a trawler, I think its easier when things get broken down a bit. And I think I have the standing to make some...

Chirp vs Forward Scan My new build and new electronics were operational in late July, so scant experience with it, and its Simrad. I don't want to turn this into a Simrad thread but there is a detail some might like to know if readers are pondering it all for themselves. Underway in deep...

    Garmin Sonar for Cruising

Following. I installed Simrad in July, including a mid-range chirp and forward scan. I have read that one can tune the chirp (and possibly forward scan?) to the purpose you cite, of looking at bottom composition for holding. But having said that, I have yet to find anything online that...

    Cruising realities

The second most popular marriage joke (after, if Moma ain't happy ain't nobody gonna be happy) is: no man is a hero to his wife.

    Cruising realities

Then there is age and time. Which is an issue that spans many pastimes. In golf there is a saying: by the time you can afford to lose a golf ball you are too old to hit it far enough to lose it. By the time you can afford a serious passage making boat, load it with spares, develop the skills...

    Another new start for Helmsman

David Welcome aboard. Thanks for the kind words. Feel free to lob questions, here or if you prefer via the PM message box. Happy to help. I think you will find the Helmsman owners are all pretty generous with their advice and experiences. Up front, you can't go wrong with either the 38...

Need Guidance on Choosing a Boat Please

A Swift Trawler 35 might check all of your boxes. I don't track their prices, but you might not find one at your price point.

    A return fuel what if?

"The rule was to open one return before closing any other, unless at least two were already open." Yep. I was taught "open before closing." And the reason given was the back pressure will blow various seals, which is catastrophic, and expensive to repair. This was for Cummins. Your mileage...

    Hard vs Round Chine

I'd emphasize what's been said above: its a lot of things working together. But what bears more comment is sheer weight. While a full displacement is easily defined (can't do more than hull speed), and a planning hull is easily defined (designed to get on top of its bow wave and plane)...

New Helmsman model - 38 Sedan

Agree on the importance of hull shape. I have to say Helmsman gets it, and does a good job of providing views of it. When shopping I was struck with how hard it was to find anything to see on hull shapes of most new boat brands. Most brands focus on glamor shots featuring Madison Ave models...

New Helmsman model - 38 Sedan

Having opened the door to mentioning the engine room access I did notice something else. The engine room in the 38e is pretty darned good as far as access goes. However, the two least accessible components are the transmission (for both dipstick checks, and fluid replacement) and the salon...

New Helmsman model - 38 Sedan

Side doors to the cockpit were an option that became available years ago on the 38e and 43e. And more recently, doors to the side deck beside the pilothouse. I optioned both. So I have midships side, cockpit side, and swim platform door. I'll put a video below where you can see the cockpit...

Mine and many 38's have side cockpit doors. I hear you on few pics at this point. For me it was weeks before I paused to take some.

New Helmsman model - 38 Sedan

I had not focused on the cockpit size difference before. Some pics would be great. And, I had not noticed there is no room for side doors to the cockpit, but with the side decks and the side doors there I'd bet you won't miss them much.
