I am trying to sell a donated 36' Grand Banks

Back to the OP problem, December is not a great time to sell any boat and located in a relatively isolated location makes it tougher. Add that to a limited clientele,, older wood boat, a quick sale is going to require a very attractive price. At least it is a desirable model, well know in the...

I am trying to sell a donated 36' Grand Banks

"I also think a person who can only afford a $20,000 boat wouldn't care if the hull is wood, steel or fiberglass. It is rich buzzards on a site like this one that look ahead to potential problems that give wood a bad name." Mike This is an unnecessary and erroneous statement. A person buying...

    Fantasy islands

Last week I was sitting in a hot tub on the aft deck of a 120 passenger motor sailor anchored 200yds off a sandy beach of Bora Bora sipping some kind of rum concoction (or maybe 3). I know some of you would rather have a root canal than take a cruise ship, but my MS350 was not going to get here...

    Dry bilge??? Raise your hand.....

I hear a lot of responses of "dry bilges". I've found it's dry..... until it's not. Leaky hose, stuffing, a leaky freeze plug, any of a bunch of things that happen then it's not dry. You know, "It worked yesterday" syndrome, been there and seen that. That's why we have auto bilge pumps for when...

Tow Boat US boards my boat without my permisiom, knowledge, approval and now wants 9K

Just a comment. Had a small dink 13ft with 30hp O/B sunk in a storm. I was in Hawaii, boat in Calif. Called Sea Tow and they would not take it on, said they don't do salvage at all. That was the Main office, not the franchise as Sea Tow doesn't have a franchise in Norcal, they just farm out to...

At St Michael’s Marina file price

Cruising Mexico in the 70s diesel was $0.16/gal. Now those were the days. Just filled up here in Delta Discovery Bay at $4.75/gal while rest of Delta is nearer $6/gal. On the road more like $6.72/gal. It sucks!

    Schooner Mast kills one

Next month we cruise in Tahiti on a BIG sailing cruise Ship. Mostly for show but if one of those masts goes down there will be a lot of damage. I will watch them LOL.

    Boat Theft

Had our small ski boat stolen last year when tied on dock behind trawler at an Island we belong to. Luckily amateurs, found it in weeds on another Island, Honda ignition was jimmied but couldn't get it started. Cut their hand trying so got DNA like that will ever be used. Just stole radio. Now...

Why Move from Sailboat to Trawler?

I should qualify that when we cruised on the 40ft ketch for 2 yrs, we were in our 20s. Now in our 70s the desire to get up on the fore deck in a good blow is less than desirable. The MS350 was bought for some of the reasons mentioned, staircase with handrail to bridge instead of ladder, Transom...

Why Move from Sailboat to Trawler?

Don't want to be a bummer but we did same thing, went from our 40ft ketch to 45ft trawler and finally up to a 70' ship (lol). Handling, no issue. Maintenance for a ma and pa crew was overwhelming. Had 5 staterooms, 5 heads, crew quarters, all of which we didn't use. Wanted the size for good...

    What Would You Have Done?

It's easy to question the response time but remember the "Miracle on the Hudson". When pilots used the simulator knowing the failure was coming and knowing what it was, they could land the plane back on an airport 50% of the time. But when you factor the time to recognize something is wrong...

    Cruise speed and fuel consumption

5kts all day @ 1/2 gal/hr. Anything else is not reasonable. This was our Willard Vega ops @ 2200rpm. Anything more was really uncomfortable ride and noise wise.

    Mainship 400 Generator Coolant

Gawd, after reading this am I ever so glad mine came without a genset. I just use a small Honda gen that if it dies, I just have to throw it overboard and buy another LOL! Hate engineering with no maintenance thoughts. Luckily I was able to repair a fuel tank. Only way to get out of boat is cut...

    Trawler Recommendations

I lived full time in a 45ft Newport Trawler, wood 1970s boat. A little small but doable. I have a Mainship 350/390 and would not recommend it to anyone as a liveaboard. Love the boat for few week excursions but not full time. Had a 70ft Halmatic which was just too big to maintain for...

Proposed boating safety law in Florida

Just did some checking and looks like all states accept Hawaii or other state cards if NASBLA approved (exception in La for PWCs). I might get an issue since live 1/2 time Hawaii, 1/2 time Ca. have card from Hawaii but resident of California. But the courses are basically the same so we will...

Proposed boating safety law in Florida

Like most of you I am against more regulation but for more education. After seeing a guy with a new $500,000 go fast come into a crowded anchorage over July 4th, walk to the bow, drop a small anchor until it hits the 20ft bottom, he secures it and proceeds to the cockpit to party. Most of us...

    An outboard motor whine

Now I use a little more hp, but currently have Hondas, 15hp, 30hp and 50hp. The 30hp has been sunk twice, underwater for 3 days (freshwater). Engine pulled out, drained, oil in the cylinders, new gas and oil and started right up and still running. (This will seldom works with a 2 cycle as rust...

Proposed boating safety law in Florida

I have a safety course card from Hawaii. That gonna be accepted in California, Florida, rest of the states? True, for someone boating for 60+ years, it didn't add much to my nautical lore, but it might help the young new guy who borrows his friends jet ski, launches in a 5mph bay and takes off...

    Mainship 430 sump?

FYI, on my MS350 the sump is wired thru the "Head" DC breaker. Had that off and was wondering why shower sump not working LOL! After testing for power at pump accidently turned Head breaker on and viola! All right with the world again

    Propane Stove Install Help/Suggestions

It's hard to cover everything in a short blurb. I have cruised with all electric in my 70 footer and propane in 39, 40 and 45 footers, all in the tropics. I cannot say that I noticed more heat with propane vs electric. There may be, but at no time did I or the first mate say, "Wow, this propane...

    Propane Stove Install Help/Suggestions

There are a lot of advantages of propane over elec cooking in 3rd world countries. Spent over 2 years in central America and propane was easy to get. We actually had a propane refer and after 2 years we were the only boat with a working refer left. One problem with electric is you need a...

    Rebuild

We rebuilt a 6000# MTU engine in the boat as to remove required removal of the top of the main cabin ( it had been done once before we got the boat). All we did was remove the 600# crank for rebuild and two rods that had overheated when a bearing failed. This required some real thought and...

PNW to Mexico, Panama Canal, and Florida, on our way at last!

You probably will be further south by then, but Oct 2-8th is fleet week in the SF Bay. Fun time on the water especially the Blue Angels on the weekend. Also, you will miss some great cruising in the Delta, a unique water playground in the Pacific. But I know all too well the alure to get south...
