    Aging

Boy, I agree with the buildup of clutter these days. I got a pilots license in 1970. Now the aspects of flying a plane have not changed, but 50+ years of govt regulations, incredible electronics that can give you way more info than you need to fly the plane, I don't know how anyone can absorb...

    Is Autopilot Necessary In PNW?

Like so many other responses, ABSOLUTELY have it. Not only for the obvious, it is a major safety item. If you have to do anything from navigating to changing fuel tanks to taking a "sand box stop", the AP protects you. I had to bring our boat up from Santa Barbara to SF with a broke AP, it was...

    Mainship 390 wiring trunk

Agreed. You may disconnect cables at tranny and make sure they are fully engaging the trans. If you are lucky it might just be cable adjustment, a broken or sticky cable. I assume you have checked oil level in the trans. Worse case the tranny has internal issues. Removing the ZF is a bear, hope...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

Who said I was white!!! Also who said I was rich??? Everyone thinks if you own a yacht you are rich and we all know that aint true. My plane costs less than a new Tesla so jumping to conclusions can be a big mistake. Ok, I confess, I might be a little white LOL!:banghead:

    Sales taxes & Ownership

This is a different world. They have agents that handle all their entry paperwork. Not the same as you or I taking our Cessna or Bonanza into Mexico. Of course United or American pilots don't have to prove they have authorization to fly into a foreign country. Same for corporate or Charter...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

I have never flown a trust owned, LLC owned or rental aircraft (or boat for that matter) outside the US so I have no personal experience with this issue. I read numerous aircraft association magazines monthly and over the years the issue has been discussed and updated. It all revolves around...

We had our Willard Vega with Progressive. No survey needed for the smaller boats. Have them now with our MS350.

    Sales taxes & Ownership

Different states have different tax requirements. For example, Hawaii has no "Use" tax or personal property tax but does have Sales tax. California has both sales and use plus personal property taxes. So, if you buy a used car (or boat) in California, but don't register it in California (totally...

    hot alternator

I suspected it might be a "one wire" alternator. Then a short or bad diode could leave the field energized even when shut down. You should be able to take the alternator in to a car parts store and have them run a test on it. If it is an internal short then you will need to replace or rebuild it.

    hot alternator

Just a wild guess, but it is possible the field is being energized when you think the field is turned off. This could create an active field current that creates heat. I can't tell if it has a separate field energize connection so it could be internal meaning a failure in the field circuit...

US Couple in Caribbean feared dead

Yup, ya pays your money and takes your chances. Off lower Mexico, 2am and an unmarked patrol boat circles us. Cud just as easily used us as target practice. In Nicaragua a Colonel takes me off the boat. Cudda been a trip to prison but turned out he liked cruisers and actually helped us clear San...

    Fishing from a trawler

Type of fishing is a good point. When just traveling down/up the coast to/from Mexico or Panama Canal, we just threw out 2ea 300lb test lines with feathers on them. In order to know when the fish hit, we ran the line thru a clothes pin so it would "Snap" when lure was hit. The dog got trained...

    Fishing from a trawler

We turned our 45ft Newport Trawler into a commercial salmon fishing vessel primarily for tax purposes. Put 2 hand downriggers on it and used a couple of poles. Mostly off Pt Reyes north of SF. I have talked elsewhere about avoiding taxes and this was another legal endeavor. Saved sales tax and...

Owning a 40 foot trawler with no generator?

You can see that many owners have found ways to bypass the genset depending on their needs. We have no genset but, we do keep that handy little Honda 2k generator in the lazarette. I would keep one aboard at all times. Example, picking up boat new to us MS350 at Santa Barbara we had to deliver...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

Oh, as far as possible Ga taxes, I was at a big marina in Brunswick, Ga. If they had contacted me or the state had requested taxes I would have obediently paid them. Usually the govts have the marinas give them a list of vessels docked there for tax purposes. My guess is it is very common for Fl...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

No one says the govt doesn't make some really stupid taxes. Can't remember how long ago but Feds decided they cud collect a "Fair Share" from the rich who buy yachts so they levied a tax on new yachts. Well, the rich didn't get that way by paying extra taxes so they started buying yachts...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

Like Twistedtree, our plan was never to leave the boat at a permanent moorage. The plan was to keep in the east coast for a few years and cruise in the Caribbean thus having no permanent home other than the documented home port. We legally returned to Fl and Bahamas and Ga for 5 years and then...

True, we did purchase thru a yacht broker and he did file the paperwork for us. That's what happens when you assume too much. Assumed the purchase of a cruising trawler would be thru a broker.:banghead:

Loss of SV Rum Truffle, Bahia del Sol bar, El Salvador

In Baja there is a bar "Boca de Solidad" about 30 miles north of Mag Bay. You can enter Mag Bay and travel up a pretty, narrow channel to the Boca then enter back in the Pacific. We anchored on the inside of the Boca and then climbed a hill that gave a good shot of the channel. Watched a...

First, the objective of my purchase of the vessel in Florida was not to save on taxes. I had a 5 year plan to cruise the Caribbean. I then learned of the 90 movement from Fl and sales/personal property taxes were waived. Second, I had planned to move the vessel out of Fl for the hurricane...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

It is sad that you need to talk with authority about something you don't have any knowledge about. It is NOT tax evasion in Florida! As has been stated just after your post, it is totally legal in Florida to not pay taxes on the sale or purchase of a vessel if it is moved out of the state within...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

This is NOT breaking the law, it is using the loopholes of various tax systems to ones advantage. Just as boaters sold their boats off shore of California then took to Mexico, it is a legal method of legally avoiding excess taxes. If you want to pay taxes you don't need to, by all means do so...

Maximum RPM and Cruising Speed, Single engine MS 400

THis is so true! My 40ft Newport trawler (wood 1970s version) had 2 400hp GMCs, run at 3000rpm we had 10kts@ 1 nm/gal. Can't compare to a 39ft MS with a single CAT turning 1800rpm getting 2.3mpg. This is why my figures with the CAT in almost the same vessel are more relevant than other engines...

Maximum RPM and Cruising Speed, Single engine MS 400

You are not looking at the figures. That's at 1800rpm, the engine hasn't even spun the turbo up yet. It's all about fuel burn vs speed. Just this weekend we were doing 8.5 at 1800. Just because I have 350hp available doesn't mean I want or need to use it but it's there if I need it. Some people...
